Hi guys,

Maybe Smellie, Claven or Nabs can help me on this one. I was wondering if originally the Mauser Kar98az had the the fittings (buttplate, barrel bands, bayo lug etc), the bolt and the receiver blued or in the white? I know some ww1 G98 had the bolt and receiver unblued... thanks guys.

The pre and early war patterns had the butt plate, bolt, bayonet lug, bolt take down disc and receiver (can't remember this one exactly) "in the white". Changes were made during wartime and it seems that previously "in the white" pieces were blued (my 1916 Erfurt is an example of this).

It is also quite possible that during refurbishment, a pre or early war Kar 98 would be refinished to the updated specifications.

Do you have a Kar 98 ? I would love to see pictures.

Mine is a 1914 Danzig, refurbed in Czechoslovakia in 1923. It is blued, also has the finger-groove stock.

I know it's not "correct" but it has been through at least 2 wars, possibly 3; it can look however it wants to look.

Nice handy little rifle, though: almost TOO nice to take seriously as a weapon.

Nabs nailed it. I would suggest though, that the "in the white" parts liested stayed that way all through the war. Typically blued parts that should be white indicate either depot work, or use by the Weimar Republic.

I was under the impression that receivers were blued from the factory in the later production Kar98a's. I've seen some really nice examples that weren't refurbed or rebuilt with blued receivers.

Thanks guys! your inputs are appreciated. Yes I do have a KAR98A, or AZ. Its a Danzig 1918, and it also got the date 1920 (both date on the receiver). Love those WW1 rifles, I also have to chance to own an old mauser G98 1901.

I believe virtually ALL Kar98AZ receivers were blued - sorry I didn't notice Nabs said some were in the white. The only white receiver 98AZ's I'm aware of were trials rifles, though I stand to be corrected?

I'll have to check my reference book when I get back home as i think I saw a 1910 Amberg kar 98 with a "in the white" receiver. If someone has a copy of Dieter Storz's Rifle / Carbine 1898 handy, have a peak in the Kar 98 section and see if any of them have "in the white" receiver reference pictures.

My 1916 Erfurt, a "e" block carbine, has all blued parts and was not refurbished.

For the OP, what block letter is your Danzig ? I had an "r" block which was reported to be near the end of 1918 and she was double dated. I am curious to see just how far Danzig and Erfurt got in 1918 for production.

I have some K98a and K98az parts (front and rear bands, sight hood ass'y, bayonet lug, etc) and they are in the white. More of a Greyish color. Not blued for example like you see on a K98k band from WW2.

Hey guys, does anyone know where to find the upper hand guard with the rear sight cut out? ive got a 1918 erfurt in my possession and half the upper hand guard around the rear sight has been broken.

I have a all matching 1917 erfurt ''d'' serie that has not been refurbished and has all blued parts
