I haven't bought a new milsurp rifle since last September so I was due!
Wife (Mamabear) and the kids and I went to the Dawson Creek show today. We stopped at Tim Horton's for a coffee on the way. In the drive through there was a lady whose spare tire was coming loose from up under her SUV. I ran up there and let her know what was going on, so that was my good deed for the day. Must have helped because I found a very nice Remington M1917 in the first five minutes after we arrived. He had it priced about right but I decided I wanted to look around.
Found a Type 38 Arisaka that looked nice, few SVT-40s, SKSs, one lone Maltby with a mis striked No4 MkI* and a Mosin Sniper. Never thought to see if the Arisaka had its mum etc, and don't know enough about the Mosins to know if it was a refurb or repro so I left them be and went back to get the M1917. When I got back there he had knocked it down to under half of what they have been going for in this kind of condition on the EE. Snag!
I don't know much about these, other than I've wanted one in a bad way for a while. Can you guys help me out with what I have? It has its original dated '18 barrel stamped with the Remington R. The bolt has an E on the underside and a D with a flaming bomb on top (Eddystone bolt?). Several flaming bombs remain on the stock. Barrel is mirror from about 2" from the breech ahead and is very mildly pitted right at the very start. Rifling is very strong.
Everything under the wood looks brand new. Blueing there is in high 90's%. The receiver and nose cap both have cosmo on them still. Can't wait to shoot it tomorrow!
Now I need a matching sling and bayo!
Here's the update on the rest of the family after two years, everyone else is doing it so I figure why not!
So on the left column it starts with Grandpa's 1915 LSA No1 MkIII sporter. Grandma bought this for him in 1956 as his wedding gift from her.
Below that is my 1945 BSA No5 Mk1 and bayo.
Then a 1945 Longbranch No4 Mk1/3 that I restored recently from sporter status. Its going to become a replica 4T, that's soon to be its 'scope there.
Then my beloved Ross MkI* I'm trying to bring back to its former glory.
The new M1917.
Right column:
1944 Maltby No4 MkI* (mis strike) that was converted to a Standard No4 sporter at Parker-Hale post war and bought by my Dad at Oakford's General Store unfired since conversion in 1974 for $34. His first rifle.
As issued '42 Longbranch, world travelor
1918 NRF No1 MkIII*, ongoing restoration project. BSA commercial barrel from FTR in 1953 at BSA.
Crombie Ross MkIII commercial conversion. Mirror bore! Too bad its been cut...
And last but not least, my '55 Breda Garand.
