Kaufman Surplus and Arms - 1963/64

I find it funny that back in the day, they sold cut down sporterized rifles for more money than the originals - though I suppose milsurp collecting back then was not what it is today. It's interesting how tastes have changed.

In the 1960's if you have a nice surplus 98 action action, hinged bottom metal, a decent stock, etc. build by a smith - that was the epitome of cool and cost an arm and a leg for even regular un-embellished, well build guns with average walnut. People wanted these ahead of even pre-64 Winchester model 70's.

Now, nice condition used guns like that are sold under $500 bucks imported from Scandinavia, while the Mausers they were built from - in military trim sell for sometimes thousands.

I'm old enough to remember first hand when Lee Enfields were being cut down out of barrels of them found at the local Canadian tire like it was a cottage industry. They weren't even locked up or anything. My first ever big bore rifle was an old 1917 BSA MkIII* my dad and I cut down in the 1980's before I knew any better. I did kill a few deer with that old dog though... open sights and all.
