A guy was complaining that his Mossberg was not shooting well. It was fine last fall but this spring it was all over the place. It was over 8" at 25 yards. I did not think it was the scope but maybe leading. Long story short, I could not get a cleaning rod through the bore. A .18 rod was to tight. Used a .17 rod and brush and started to clean. There was a tight spot mid way, it was surface rust. Step by step I got it clean. Finally able to run a clean dry patch with no drag. Now a 1/2 at 25!! A simple coat of oil last fall would have saved hours of work.

Goes for any firearms - rusted steel takes up 10x the volume of space as the good stuff.
