Keeping Spent Brass at the Shooting Range

I'd only have to be told once that I couldn't pick up my own brass before I cancelled my membership at that range. I can see some of the big ranges saying that they own any abandoned brass, so it can be sold to help defray costs, and keep the costs of memberships down, but that's not the same as being told you can't keep your own.

How much money can you make on selling used brass?

I mean at 2-4 Dollars a pound you literally needs thousands of pounds of the stuff to make any difference. That difference is easily made up by charging your members maybe 5-10 dollars a year.

I just don't like the idea of a range that has to constantly police its own members over such a non issue such as picking up used brass.

Breath.... Better now.

At our range there are a couple of buckets to dump brass in, I usually look through them for anything decent. Most people with reloadable brass take it home, so it is mostly cheap Breden primed stuff in there. I managed to get about 300 rounds of 9mm saved up and last time I was there some idiot that was there the day before was shooting his .308 forward of the shooting line and left all his Hornady brass lying in the grass. I have and reload for a .308 so it was a no brainer, I got 40 rounds of really nice brass to use. I assume it was once fired as well cause he left the factory boxes lying around as well, some people are pigs.

I would never shoot at a range that doesn't allow me to collect my brass (safely, behind the firing line etc.).
If they thinks its theirs they need to pay you for it.

Where I shoot there is a bucket to toss brass in. But hey no rules about it. The head guy for range been shooting and will even tell you take it if you want it. Last time I was there, I pulled at least 100 cases for 223 and 9mm.

I pickup my brass after/during shooting.

I've seen folks that walk behind other shooters collecting other folks' spent brass. It's like chasing off the racoons in the backyard. Ask permission.

I've had that happen to me before. Sad thing is, it was a guy that I would see at three gun comps, so you have to wonder if they have poor judgement or just a lot of nerve.
