I noticed that the Keltec PLR-22 only comes with the 10 rd magazines now instead of the 25 rd magazines. Was just wondering if anyone knew why. or has the same thing happed to this like the smith and wesson 22 mags

im just wondering about the magazine that orginally came with that firearm, does it have to be pinned to 10 rounds like the Smith and wesson rimfire rifles that were brought in. i know that the magazine that came with it was for the rifle so it was allowed to be 25rds but im not sure if that has changed because i noticed that they alll come with 10 rd mags now

Well if its classified as a pistol now, it's restricted, therefore the 10 round limit. So yes the mags do need to be pinned to 10 rounds.

Probably a classification change. Not sure when.

It being restricted has nothing to do with mag capacity. It being considered a handgun does. Plenty of restricted rimfires with standard cap mags on the market..

Arms East was selling them a while back with no mag but you could order the the mag for a rifle. You can use the 50 round ar15 con mags in them
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww4YJbtIrcQ It's like the Ruger Challenger you can use the 25 round mags

thanks for the answers guys, I was just wondering because the mags for the PLR-22 are the same mags that are used in alot of rimfire rifles (heres a link to the magazine, its the exact same mag except the PLR 22 one says keltec https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopexd.asp?id=67&bc=no ) So i still dont really understand how these ones can legally be 25 rounds while the the 25 rd ones that come with it have to be pinned to 10 now

thanks for your response "age" now that you mentioned this, it comes to mind that i remember this, but now the question is, how do I know the difference between the rifle mag and the pistol mag. Arms East was who I ordered from.

As I understand it:

The PLR22 is classified as a pistol. Any magazine "designed" for the gun must therefore be limited to 10 rounds.

However, the PLR22 accepts magazines designed for AR .22 conversion uppers. As .22 rifle magazines these have no capacity restriction and most hold around 26 rounds, give or take. Since these mags are not "designed" for the PLR22 they can be used in that gun.

This is similar to two other situations:

Even though semi-auto centre fire rifles are limited to 5 rounds, the LAR 10 round mag can be used in an AR because it was "designed" for a pistol, and pistol mags can hold 10 rounds.

Even though the Ruger Charger is classified as a pistol, a 25 round 10/22 rifle magazine (except for Ruger's own, which is prohibited) can be used in it.

In actual fact, all this is somewhat of a grey area caused by the ambiguous and fundamentally absurd firearms legislation.

Can you put one of the CA or AR stocks and have it become non-restricted because of OAL? Would it be long enough?

Nope. It would be classified as a handgun on the reg certs, so it can never become non-restricted. Once a handgun, always a handgun.
Definition of a restricted firearm

According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:

  • a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,
  • a firearm that
    • is not a prohibited firearm,
    • has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
    • is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,
  • a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or
  • a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm

Then there's the Henry Mare's Leg, which is a pistol according to the manufacturer, but being lever actioned and requiring two hands to operate, is non-restricted, and not treated as a 'hand gun'. It can hold 15 rounds (shorts).
