Back in February I purchased a kel-tec RDB-S,I thought I would jump on the opportunity while I still had the chance based on the reviews I've read. I still haven't shot the gun because I'm constantly on the road but intend to sometime in the near future.

Now I'm hearing about issues with this gun and firing pins breaking and am kind of concerned. Most of the issues stem from rifles purchased a few years back from 2019. I'm wondering if anyone as of late who has purchased an RBD recently, regardless of model, has had any issues with firing pins or other.

I also jumped on about 1500 rnds of 5.56 62 green and am now thinking of purchasing a rifle which can be a little more reliable with these rounds like a kodiak defense or, if I can find a left handed model, ruger American ranch.

Thoughts on all of this?

Thanks.

I have one and the pin broke also, bought it second hand but was still like new fella said not even 50 rounds fired and it looked like it, took it apart to clean and found the pin in 2 pieces .
contacted vault and I had to buy the pin as I wasn't the original buyer a whopping $16 dollars and they shipped one out to me.

the rifle is a blast to shoot, triggers great love the bottom ejection and accurate with the factory flip sights. keep it you will enjoy it, but also buy more MANY MORE lol

I also have the RFB .308 and sub 2000 gen2.

I had the SU-16 and it blew up in my face parts everywhere will never recommend that rifle to anyone lol.

I will say vault went over the rifle and sent a new unit to replace it so I give them props on that but I swaped it for a mini 14 when they were still available etc,

No more firing pin issues after replacement? I sent a email to vault regarding purchasing some pins and springs, still waiting on reply

I asked, Vault sent me a spare firing pin, took some time due to supply issues with Ket-Tec but all went well with some patience...

Cheers
Jay

I've read that already. That's why I was wanting to get a few just in case. What type of ammo were you firing when it broke?

The standard rdb, you can see it as well as some of the light primer strike on the ammo. It’s all bulk 556 or 223 all American made mostly federal ball 55 g or Winchester 223 55 g. Has been infallible with the new firing pin. I tried to get them to send me an extra pin at my cost but was assured the replacement pin is much better than the factory, time will tell. Still one of my favourites.

I picked up a rdb survival early in the spring, put through about 300rds of non corrosive surplus 5.56 without issue, the last 100rds was a rapid fire fun shoot, then next time out, click, no bang. Looked at the round, appeared to have a light primer strike. Did a cleaning, same thing, click, no bang. Did a quick internet search, seemed to be a common firing pin problem on the Kel tec forums, both with broken firing pins, and short firing pins. Mine wasn’t broken, but I figured the heat from the last 100rds maybe affected the temper of the pin and quickly wore it down. Called up the Vault, buddy there told me he wasn’t aware of firing pin problems, but quickly sent out a new firing pin, complete with a new bolt just to make sure. (Really happy with the service even if they wouldn’t admit a known problem) Installed the new bolt and firing pin and click, boom. I’m a happy man again. A few hundred rounds later, I load a mag with some 223 hunting rounds and my 12yr old daughter fires 1rd dropping her first deer, life is good. Next outing, switch back to 5.56 surplus, click, no bang. Looks like light primer strike. Thoroughly clean it, click, no bang. Not sure why, but I tried switching back to a 223 hunting round, and click, bang! WTH? Put the 556 back in, and fired off 30rds as fast as I could change mags with no issues. Then, I chambered a round but changed my mind and ejected it. When I looked at that live round, it appeared to have a light primer strike even though I never tried firing it. Tried chambering and ejecting a few more without firing, and same thing. The firing pin is marking the primers. Anyone know if this is normal? Took it all apart, and compared the firing pin with my old one, they measure the same. Put the old bolt and firing pin in, and click, bang! I haven’t contacted Vault yet, but I think maybe something is hanging up and the hammer isn’t hitting the firing pin properly. I’m going to get out my magnifying glasses and see if I can see anything, but kind of hard when everything is working. Anyone else had this thinking it was the firing pin, but wasn’t?
