I'm thinking about getting a kel tec predator and was wondering if anybody owns one or had a chance to shoot one and what they think

I had one for about a month. If accuracy is not important to you then it's mediocre at best. I'll never buy another. I don't think the extra money for the stock and forend is worth it either. And the trace optic is not very good. Oh , I had the pistol grip version also and if I had to choose one , it would be the pistol grip version.

Any other feedback on this gun?

I was toying with getting one too, and the portability/compactness would really be useful for my needs, but not if it's total garbage.

Most of the reviews are pretty good, though there is a strong element that seems to just hate them. I'd be cross shopping a CZ58 (in .223) which seems to get more consistent reviews, but is a bit less useful (to me) I think as something to travel/camp with or potential HD.

If portability matters, you can get a SU16 F. It folds in half and sells for 800. Or you can pay the extra $400 for the OD furniture . If your the original owner, you are covered by a full warranty. Resale is a PITA though, if that matters. I had a practicaly brand new predator listed on the EE for around $700 and couldn't sell it. But the 2 I had went bang every time , no matter what I fed it. If you buy used , you have zero warranty.

Silveragent - thanks - if you don't mind my asking, how long ago was that?

Brianma65 -

I saw the SU16F too - not as many around it seems.

I thought the bi-pod was really cool although a bit gimmicky, though the reviews are pretty consistent that it's none too useful. The two clips in the butt is neat.

The only advantage of the SU-16 Pred. it seems, besides being even more dressed up, is that you can fire when folded. Besides the novelty of this, which is pretty cool, I was thinking being only two feet long and non-restricted, it could make for an emergency home defence weapon that's more powerful than my .22LR, but not so devastatingly loud/ear damaging (indoors in a house without ear protection) as a 12 gauge. Is this feature worth $400+?

Then again, 99% of my usage, hopefully 100%, will just be outdoors or at a range shootin' targets and not home defending.

Anyway, thanks very much. I think I'll have to go down to Reliable and at least look at the SU-16 in person and go from there...

About three years ago. It was the SU16F model. When they reintroduced it as the Predator I asked if they had redesigned the receiver and did not hear if they did. That is the only thing that would convince me to get another one. I love the concept and that is why I bought it first of all but I would not depend on it. Maybe as a backup firearm. Very light and folds. Nice idea. Reliable is a good store so be sure to ask them what alternatives they might suggest. ;)

I think a shotty would be better for home defense. And with the flash hider , the predator is very loud. If you go the SI16 f route and you like it, you can add the accessories later. You can buy a pistol grip stock and a diff forend for it . It's the same parts as the FX. I'm sure you'll soon see the predator parts for sale soon. And if you don't like it your only in to it for $800 instead of $1400.

Quite a few su16 threads around, most people who ask are eventually turned off.
The rest of us learned the hard way :p

If it doesn't break it's an ok toy.
I would NEVER EVER trust my life to it. I'd pick up a bat for hd before an su16

Thanks very much for the replies.

I still like it, but I think I'll give it a pause and really look at my other options such as the vz 58 and Type 97.
