Hi G-Nutz,

I just acquired a new Kel-Tec SU16FX. The manual clearly states "designed to chamber 5.56 NATO (.223 Remington) cartridge" , yet a sales person advised me not to shoot the 5.56 from it (due to higher pressures). I went on the web and the people are so divided around this subject, mainly because the caliber stamped on the side of the rifle reads only .223 Remington and not 5.56.

Thoughts?

I would go with what i learned in my firearms class, use what the barrel is stamped for

I called Kel tec about this, and was told that the barrels are chambered in 5.56 , but are stamped 223 for export into Canada. You should call them yourself , to ease your own mind.

That makes sense. The US Government won't let rifles chambered in military calibers be exported (without an end-user certificate anyway) so manufacturers stamp them .223 or .308 for export.

It makes no sense at all, but it is what it is. Though I'm sure Kel Tec didn't B.S me :) , maybe there's a way to verify this for your self.( a tool maybe?)

Talked to Kel-Tec today and they assured me that the rifle is built for 5.56 NATO caliber (head space, pressures and all). Called the place I bought it from and they were adamant I don't shoot 5.56 from the rifle since "they saw damages to the receiver" from "several customers using 5.56". Now what??????

Well your talking a Kel-Tec not a Colt, you want to avoid possible problems shoot only .223 remington. You will avoid any possible pressure spikes and somewhat higher pressure loads in a lower end firearm. There's really not a huge difference anyway; maybe 50 to 150 FPS depending on barrel length so stick with .223 it's more widely available.

IMO you should stick with the .223 ammo, why take the chance with the dirty norc? There's been quite a few issues with the Norc , and given this guns poly receiver. Why chance it to save a few $$$.anyway that's what I did.

I'm sorry to say this since you just bought your Kel-tec rifle, but perhaps it's time to step up to a better quality and safer firearm. If you did there would be no concern over which ammo. to use or if your rifle will come apart dangerously in your hands like they have for others.
If you are set on keeping the Kel-Tec then using the .223 ammo. seems like a safer way to go allowing a little more margin for safety on a rifle that some would argue as being suspect when safety becomes the topic.
