Hey everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing a new NON-RESTRICTED tactical rifle that has the ability of taking AR-15 style magazines chambered in .223. Iv been looking around for something I can buy right around $1000 (maybe a little more) and have stumbled upon the Kel Tech SU-16E.
Apparently it's being geared towards the Canadian community, I was wondering firstly is there any other tactical NON-RESTRICTED rifle I can look at for this price point. As well as is there anyone that has purchased this rifle and has any feedback on it....iv heard that red lion precision has a machined aluminum foreend for this rifle but apparently doesn't ship to Canada 🇨🇦, anyone know of this problem or where to get a different foreend if I were to purchase this rifle? And any opinions any feedback will help!

Thanks and safe shooting!

I've got the su16 standard non tactical, got it for the same reason you're looking. I think the only other NR rifle that may fit your needs is the vz58. But they don't take AR mags.

I like the standard su16 because you can fit 2 10rnd LAR mags fitted together with a mag wedge in the stock... this means if you want tactical or something for 3 gun, I can have 40rnds on/in the gun with no need for mag pouches..... that to me is more tactical than any pistol grip and carbine stock

Hows it shoot? I hear pretty mixed reports on the accuracy of these bad boys. They are mighty tempting though, especially at like $550USD from IRG.

I have the SU-16 tactical and a Type 97 - which would be my only other recommendation (depends on your definition of tactical). Both take most steel AR mags, the type 97 can take polymer mags if you do some grinding in the mag well.

The SU-16 Tactical is fun, I find that scope rings don't hang on very well at all to the polymer rail on the top of the reciever so I will try some loc-tite - I believe this to be the reason most people say the accuracy seems sketchy - the irons, however are great.

I would probably not take the SU-16 out on really cold days as I don't know exactly how strong that polymer is.

I bought 20 of those polymer hera AR mags for a great price from wolverine and the SU 16 looks slick and handles pretty good. It's very light.

Getting out of .223/5.56NATO land, a JR Carbine or a Keltec Sub2k are insanely fun.

The "other forum" had a post with pictures of a ruptured receiver on a SU16.
I have no idea of the circumstances, but scuttlebutt seems to suggest this isn't an only occurence, although they're pre-Tactical models I think.
My only first hand knowledge is with my newly acquired Sub2K which I think is an absolute hoot.
The only thing giving me the heebiejeebies is that plastic trigger guard which also acts as the barrel folding latch.
I always think I'm going to snap it everytime I fold it up, and worry about the wear of the catch holding the chamber against the receiver.
My OCD insists I get the machined aluminum one from M*Carbo, so might as well get the trigger, springs, and 2 fingered charging handle as well.
For the .223/5.56 mission, I'm starting to look at the Troy PAR a lot more keenly...

I've heard about receivers blowing a few years ago, but I haven't heard anything lately about it. I think this was only a problem on an early run of guns, although Im no KelTec historian so don't quote me on that.

the one i got from Irunguns just this year broke on me on the weekend, i have only put a few hundred rounds through it so far. Blew the back of the receiver right off.
oh well off for warranty.

The one reason that I haven't purchased one of these yet. And from what I've read the warranty process is a nightmare with these. Good luck! Keep up updated on the progress.

I don't fold my sub2k at all. I just leave it open with the optic installed. I found most small cases/bags hold it fine in that configuration. now I'm just worried it will snap in the middle. It really does feel like a toy, but it's far too much fun to not have one. (I bought one of those glock 50rd drum mags - hilarious at the range when people see it hanging off the grip).

I should note the SU-16 feels more sturdy and hardy than the sub2k.

AHHHH finally someone who gets me this is exactly the setup I'm looking at!!!! I love the idea of magwedge it's amazing for us Canadians, and if you're running that thing for three gun you should look at the AR stock adapter for the stock SU 16 I haven't purchased one yet as I'm deciding what I want to spend I have a tendency to purchase something cheaper and then not be satisfied and end up going all out on something different today. Let me know how the accuracy is on that I would love to know from someone first hand how it shoots

I have looked at the Troy par as well and it is a beauty rifle also expect as I mention to G-force I wanted something semi automatic in order to run two lar 15 mags with a magwedge and hold 20 rounds in my clip...we'll see what happens il have to make a decision I have been looking at the Robinson XCR-L big price jump though

Your brand new SU-16 broke this weekend I think this is a clear choice for me that this is the wrong rifle, I need something that is durable as most the times il be bringing my rifle up north on my quad to the hunt camp and will use this as a outdoors all year kind of thing...

If anyone's interested, I have an SU-16 in its original box w/ all papers.
It is AS NEW, w/ fewer than 50-rds thru it.
Reason for selling: purchased an AR.
