As of last Friday the Skeet and Sporting clays fields have been shut down permanently! The Kelowna and District Fish and Game Club have decided to shut down these disiplines in order not to go to court with one of its neighbours! This is only the start! What disipline is next? Maybe we should of just gone to court and took our chances? I for one would of! Sad day for shooting sports!

The skeet and five stand have been shut down until further notice. Given the low number of members who participate in these disciplines it seems prudent. If you think a court battle is the way to go; feel free to step up and open your cheque book to help fund it.

What is the issue? Noise?

Well although the club has been there since the 1940's; urban sprawl has overtaken the facility. There is currently a lawsuit pending where one of the neighbours is the plaintiff. The complaint is increased and excessive noise.

I think the numbers are a little skewed here, the kelowna Trap skeet and sporting club has around 90 members who are all members of the Kelowna fish and game club which has a total membership of well under 1000 of which a large portion only join to get thier pistol permits and are never seen at the club.
if you dought this drive in to the trap area on a sat morning where the parking lot will be full ( 30 to 40 vehicles) and then drive down to the lower range where most days you will see a handfull of vehicles. This whole thing just smacks of a personal vendetta by a few persons who are using the misfortune of the club to hide thier own backstabbing agenda. Otherwise why not shut down the ipsic pistol bay which has far fewer users than the trap and skeet field and can shoot for a much longer time. The trap clubs shooting hours are limited to 1 pm to 7 pm on wed and only 9 am to 1 pm sat. Also remember that under the societies act directors must act in the best interest of all members not just thier own little clique.
Also under the societies act any member of the club must have access to any club records he desires within two days of written notice. So who authorized this spur of the moment agreement of was it premeditated. This was just at the injuction stage at this point anyways which would likley not have been granted as the club has been there for 50 years and is in the ALR where farmers can fire bird cannons and make all sorts of noise with impunity. there is hardly any public danger or immediate need to cease operations which would have to be proven to force an injuction. The range has been totally certified by the goverment.

Hey guys, this is brad's forum to moderate but until he gets here. I will warn you all that CGN is not the place to discuss or air clubs dirty laundry or legal problems.

Bring awareness to everyone's attention is one thing but arguing about how a club is run or about executive matters etc is not permitted on CGN

Thanks

Gwagen

I posted this as a reminder that all clubs are at risk! Its a shame that shooting clubs are at risk across Canada and North America! Its time to take a stand!!!

I think this is a good place to talk about this as the general membership is getting no information about this and if you doubt any of the numbers i quoted please show me your authenticated numbers

The membership is in excess of 1,000; contact the office if you like.

Just a point of interest , we went through the same thing in court few years back, The courts rule in our favor, simple on grounds that we were there first. You don"t build a house next to a airport then complain about the planes making noise. Same logic applies here. But yes we drop ten Gs on legal fees.
good luck guys hate to see a gun club closed for anything

Just the threat of a lawsuit from one neighbor and the club is willing to pack up and leave? In that case the guy has already won without spending a dime of his own money on legal fees.

This is unfortunate news. I am in the process of selling my house to move to Kelowna. One of the pluses was the Fish and Game Clubs amenities. Is there an alternate location that the skeet/trap shooters can go? I would be quite surprised if there was no alternate location if not my concern would be that this is the beginning of the end for the club.

Why ???

I just learned that the closure of the skeet and sporting in kelowna was just done by the fish and game club board them selves. just before they were to go in to see the judge to hear the injuction the plaintiff and or his lawyer approached the club lawyer and or reps who were there and said they had no evidence of increased shooting noise since he purchased the property. admitting they had no case. So they question remains why is the skeet and sporting shut down? The fish and game club asked the trap and skeet segment of the club to take over the building of the skeet set up and to look after the sporting clays discipline and now after all the money spent on brand new skeet machines and members efforts to build the houses the pads ect ect. Not to mention the people who went out and bought skeet guns and tube sets and sub guage loaders. last sat. there were a full squad of five shooting skeet with another full squad waiting the five stand was full with five more waiting and this does not count the people that had left or not arrived yet or were not even shooting that weekend. The club purchased the property in 1952 and the trap field with first two traps were installed in 1956.

The club hired the wrong lawyer.

Truth of this matter is the politics with in the club itself. Its a real shame that they can't get along and make the proper decisions. Instead the club formed a coo and voted out all the trap and skeet members. Now there is not one skeet/trap member on the board. I could see this coming a mile away. I had just purchased a skeet gun and just sold it a couple weeks ago at a loss because this was going to happen. I kept my trap gun but I know the days are numbered before its voted out as well.

The guy complaining bought the house appx 10 years ago and has been trying to close the club down to up his sale price. The proper lawyer could deal with this very easily.

If the other shooters think they are immune, I've got news for them. If there is ANY noise caused by a firearms coming from the property, the neighbours will complain.

It's not just shotguns that will be objected to.
