Kent Pure Gold

The batch I tested (12 ga. 1 oz.) were just under 8,000 psi. This was a few years ago before they changed the graphics on the box. I don't think they have actually changed the shell. Max pressure variation was about 120 psi. I shoot a lot of them through old English guns - great shells, the felt wad allows your chokes to work as they are supposed to. The shot sizes are English, so #7 is actually #8.

Sharptail, did you send those out for pressure testing? I seem to recall that when I called the Canadian distributor they said 6000 psi for 12, 6500 for 20, and 8200 for 16. Just under 8000 wouldn't surprise me, even the 12s have pretty snappy recoil. I shoot far more of the Winchester AA featherweights, the low noise, low recoil type in my vintage guns. They're slow at around 980 fps but are only 6000 psi pressure. Even in short 2 1/2" chambered guns they are very gentle and other's testing show the short chambers only add 200-300 psi. Just fine for clays or grouse.

Maybe I will pick up the Winchester AA's (if I find them). I'm sure they are cheaper than $18.99 per box like the Kent Pure Gold. Just want something for grouse and sharptail. North of 58, are the Winchester AA target loads in the black box the same as the featherweights you are talking about?

No, they were tested on our Oehler pressure tester. Normally that would only allow for relative comparison of pressures, but for 12 gauge we have some reference shells of known pressure to calibrate from. The system works well.

Sharptail, that's interesting on the pressure testing.
Gunsaholic, Winchester has the 2 3/4 dram AA lights, but the featherweights are lighter. They come in the same black AA boxes. The featherweights only come in 7/8 oz of 8 shot, the boxes are marked "minimum dram equivilent". They're also marked "Low Recoil, Low Noise". They're the same price of the other AAs. About $70-80 per case. Nothing better out there for starting a young shooter or for someone who is recoil sensitive. They break clays as well as anything from the 16 yard line too.
