I would like to start my 5 year old shooting rifle next spring. Most of the kid sized rifles I've seen are single shot. I don't mind bolt action but want one with more than 1 shot. What models are available???

For safety sake, I think most if not all children models are single shot. The repeaters can be so easily reloaded by an over anxious child. Not only endangering themselves, you and anyone standing nearby. I started my son with a single and cut a Lakefield Mark II stock when I deemed him old enough and competent enough to handle the responsibility of a repeating or semi gun.. A five year old has a long way to go to reach this level.

Single shot is the way to go in my opinion. This teaches shot control and making the first shot count. There is always the safety issue, with a single shot a lot less to think about for a youngster, open the bolt, look in the chamber, nothing there the rifle is empty.

I bought my boys the mossberg 801 half pint " http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=38"
It is a single shot with a plastic plug, so when they become use to using the rifle you replace it with a 10 shot mag, the mag from the mossberg 802 repeater is the mag you use in case you decide. Check around on pricing, I bought mine from wholesale sports for 159.00 each plus tax and they were the best price but you have to call them as their website does not list it.

If you want to start your child with a repeater go with a lever not a semi...

...Winchester 150 is what my Dad taught me with.

cz scout

Buy a CZ scout, comes with a single shot adapter, then later when that gets old for him, buy 5 or 10 round mags for it. Very accurate and great rifle to shoot. Later.

Started my 5 year old on a Henri Mini bolt, and it has been a great rifle. Size is perfect for him, and it is so well engineered that I can even shoot it easily and comfortably. It is single shot, but IMHO, that's really where they should start.

Any accurate bolt action .22 is a great learning tool for a 5 year old. Even if it DOES have a magazine, all Dad has to do is just teach the 5 year old with one round hand-placed in the chamber.

Nobody ever said the magazine of a bolt action HAS to have rounds in it for the rifle to work!

cz scout, accuracy of rifles much more expensive and wonderful to shoot even for tall folks, as mention comes with single shot adaptor and larger mags can be bought later. You should be able to find one new in the $400 range, resale is better than most 22's if you ever want to unload it. No sporting goods shop I know can keep this in stock, savages and malins sit on the shelves significantly longer than the scout.
