Kimber .40 or .45?

Does anyone have a Kimber in .40? I'm curious about any feedback on function, performance and reliability compared to the Kimbers in 45 ACP.

I like the .45's but I'm interested in doing some IPSC shooting, and I'd like the lighter recoil of the .40 cal. I'm only looking at the Stainless and Custom models. Fancy gold match models are out of my budget.

Thanks

JJ

Any feedback on magazine choice in 10 round .40s would also be appreciated.

There in lies the rub. Quality 10 rd .40 Cal mags for single stack 1911s are
few and far between.

Yes it always seems that the features I want in my dream gun don't match any manufacturers stock items. It's always a compromise until I can save lots of cash for a custom gun.

I am pretty sure that Gorky has had several Kimbers in .40 and .45. Ask him about the difference.

I prefer 40SW because I reload that calibre (cheaper) and it is easier for me to tailor a load to a gun. I use metalform 10rd mags for my Kimber and STI single stack 40s, and Wilson combat (8rd) or CMC (10rd) mags for my 45 Kimber.

I dont have the same model in two cals so I can't give you that comparison but I like 40SW as a calibre much more so that dictates what models of guns I go to. That seems to be the big problem I have right now - every time TSE brings in new Kimbers they usually bring in 45s (for good reason) but I would love to see more guns in 40SW (just don't know if I am the only one that feels this way :-( ).

As for reliabilty between the two calibres... get some decent mags that work, keep the gun clean and tuned, and neither calibre will be "unreliable".

What models do you have? I'm looking at a stainless II, but I'd prefer the adjustable sights which only come on the .45's.

I notice you live near Lethbridge. I live in Lethbridge as well. Don't suppose you'd be interested in meeting at the Fish & game range and showing me your collection?

Those toys are:
STI Trojan single stack 40SW
Kimber STainless target single stack 40SW
Kimber Tactical Pro II 45acp
All have adjustable sights of some sort.

Send me a PM when the weather clears and I can meet you down at the range.

Although not a Kimber, I really like the Para Ordnance P16-40 Limited. It is a double stacker but I find mag changes much faster with a double stack 1911 than a single stacker.

I agree with this point - double stack mag changes seem to be a bit easier but with a decent magwell on a single stack, mag changes are very fast as well (and if the double stack doesnt't fit you like it does not fit me, I have to make some accomodations in terms of how my guns are set up :D ).

What did you do to get adjustable sights on the Kimber Stainless in .40SW. They now come with fixed sights, and I was told the slide may require some work to fit a kimber adjustable sight.

Did you customize with another manufacters sight and could you provide some details? Cost, source, gunsmith?

CAme on the gun when I bought it - James at TSE would be the man to give a price on the above work from the Kimber Custom shop (though there are several gunsmiths in Canada who could easily do the work).

I have a Kimber TLE RLII and its by far the best gun I've ever owned. I love the way it feels and the way it shoots. My friend is massaging the trigger while Im in the states I cant wait to get back and try it. If its anything like valtro I'll be happy as ####. I like Kimbers so much Im planning on getting another one very soon.

1911 has to be a .45..... if its not its like buying a V6 mustang.
