I've just been pouring over stats and online reviews about these exact 3 rifles and here's my thoughts:
Forbes:
- I don't see it available in an all stainless in Canada.
-lots of reviews about very poor bedding jobs and fit/finish
-lots of consigned ones on a CGN dealer's website....red flag
-Price around $1700 for SS barrel, blued action
Kimber Mountain Ascent-
-can't warm up to stock color
-fluting looks a bit off, only 4 flutes and they only run short distance
-I'd never use muzzle brake, so that's a feature I don't need
-price of around $2400
Kimber Adirondack
- again, stock color is fugly
-18" barrel will have velocity loss and may affect handling. I've handled other 18" barreled guns and they feel "off" in balance
-threaded muzzle unnecessary
-price of around $2000
So after weighing all those options, I decided on a Kimber Montana in 308. Price is the lowest of the three at $1500 or so and all stainless, CRF action and barrel. Weight is 5 oz more than the Mtn Ascent. I ordered an aluminum trigger guard that shaved 2 oz off, so now a 3 oz difference. I like the stock color better, it has a full length barrel, no brake, same trigger and action.
Basically, on the Mtn Ascent, is the look of the fluted bolt, skeletonized bolt handle and 5 oz weight difference worth $900 over the Montana? I didn't think so. I've had quite a few other Kimbers, and have always like them a lot. Accuracy issues are pretty much non existent in the 84M and 84L. I've had a Classic Stainless and Classic in 308 and 243, both were plenty accurate. Same with the 84L in 280 AI. The only issues seem to be with the 8400 models, specifically the older WSM ones.
I really wanted to like the Mtn Ascent, but just couldn't justify the additional money. Maybe if Kimber changed the stock color scheme, did away with the brake and knocked a few hundred off the price, that view would change.
The Forbes just looks like a really expensive Remington Model Seven, it didn't get much attention from me. The Adirondack is too short for my liking, I think a 20" barrel would be nice, but then there's not much difference between that and a Montana either.
Anyhow, those were my thoughts.
