Good evening fellows,

I have been on the information gathering hunt for some time now to my new 1911 purchase. At present I am pondering the Pro's and Con's of these two guns. The Kimber Gold Combat II and the Springfield Armory TRP.

If you have information you can contribute about these guns I would appreciate it. Here are the manufacturor links if you feel like taking a minute to read some specs with me.

http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/customshop/goldcombat.php

Both pistols are in the $2000 ~ range. Same list of features, beveled mag well, ambi safety, front and rear serrations on slide, night sights, match barrel and bushing etc..

So which one takes the cake? Also, who are the dealers in canada for Kimber and Springfield?

Thanks so much everyone!
Jeff

I recently sold a couple of TRPS. Both came back with problems. One required a new safety, sear and hammer. The other had both mags self destruct. I would think that for the money SA could do better.

I have shot a lot of 1911's, SA, Les Baer, Wilson, Colt and Kimber, but that Kimber Gold Combat is out of this world and it would be hands down my first choice for a 1911 if I was going to sepnd that kind of money. One thing I think and Redleg can verify this, I think the Kimber Gold Combat is hand built in the custom shop.

Thank you that insight. Any input on where to buy the Kimber Gold Combat in Canada. I know TSE, Questar, and Gobles list them. But they do not have any in stock, 4 - 8 weeks to receive one is what Questar advertises.

Thanks
Jeff

Funny I was just handling both the Gold Combat II and the Springfield TRP with rail at Backcountry in Fort St. John. I forget the exact prices but they were both around $2000 (the TRP was a demo so it's slightly used). I've always liked the Kimbers but after looking at these two guns side by side, I'd go with the Springfield. It had better slide to frame fit and the trigger was much better. The Kimber is prettier but the springfield has grown on me. I don't see a "need" for the rail but the added weight would probably help keep the muzzle down and I'm sure you could have all kinds of fun adding lights and lasers.

If your serious about buying either send me a PM and I'll get you some contact info for Backcountry.

Well if the TRP trigger was anything like the one we had, it is so light the hammer followed the slide and the safety did not work.

 I'm shocked! NOT!!! Springfield has been consistently turning out crap pistols for the past decade. If you're going to drop 2K on a 1911, buy something that you can depend upon and don't have to take back to the dealer and/or send to SA, Inc., for warranty work!

Their Quality Control is totally in the crapper these days. Most of the parts are cast, and/or made in Brazil and imported into the US. Their customer service, IMHO, is lacking based on problems I had with a couple of their 1911s. Both of which they fixed several times, but they proved to be lemons.

Several other shooters I know had similar problems. For the money, it is outrageous that SA is distributing such crap! I ended up selling both pistols at a loss because I told the prospective buyers my experience with them and the problems encountered. I didn't want to pass along my misfortune to another unsuspecting shooter for the sake of a few bucks.

Buy the Kimber...

I have to say one more thing. I have owned a Thunder Rnach Specila from Les Baer which is bar none the tightedt 1911 I have ever handled, but I would still get the Gold Combat II over anything after shooting by buddies.

For around 2K, you can do much better than Springfield or Kimber. Neither company is known for good quality control and paying so much money for a mass produced 1911 full of MIM parts is unwarranted IMO. For that kind of money you can get a Les Baer, Rock River Arms, Colt Government Combat or maybe even an Ed Brown - all of which would be much better choices.
