Kimber hunter vs Montana

I'm looking at getting a nice light weight rifle in the new year. Strongly leaning towards a kimber as I like CRF actions and 3 position wing safeties and they have a nice side mounted bolt release. What are the real world differences between the Hunter and a Montana? I am under the impression they are the same barrelled action with just a different stock and some additional chamberings available for the Montana. Does the Montana have much over the Hunter to swing me that way? I'm leaning with a 6.5 creedmoor or a 7mm08. Maybe 280 AI.

I bought the Kimber Hunter last year, Kimbers are nice rifles. The only real difference is the stock and detachable mag. I sometimes wish I had gotten the Montana instead for the nicer stock but it's kind of a trade off. The stock on the Montana is much nicer than the plastic hunter stock and is roughly 5 ounces lighter according to their website which could be good or bad depending on how much weight your looking to save vs recoil sensitivity but the Hunter has the detachable mags and Montana is blind mag. Looking back if I were to redo it, I may have gone the Montana as its primarily a hiking rifle for me so the mags don't add a lot of value. If you wanted primarily a tough truck gun that is still nice and light for hikes then the hunter may be your better choice. Something I have been thinking about is seeing if I can find someone who can bring in a Montana stock for me so I can switch back and forth to have the best of both worlds.

I chose the Montana in 280AI. ..love the rifle, also very accurate at around .6 of an inch at 100 meters for 3 round groups with 162 ELD-X and 59.2 grs of RL22.

I'm looking primarily for a light weight backpack rifle for multi-night hunts.

Then I would go with a Montana. No worries about loosing the clip and it's a little lighter. Both are great rifle's though. The 84L is a nice slender rifle, I have one chambered in 270win, it's my most accurate rifle. The 84L has a 24" barrel the M84 has a 22".

I have a Montana in .257 Roberts that shoots lights out - can't for the life of me understand why Kimber builds the Roberts on a short action though.....

Here is my 84L Montana 30/06. I love it. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. While I posted some amazing groups in the link, it isn’t always THAT accurate, but it shoots under an inch for 3 shots every time. And somewhat related to another thread, the cold Bore shot is always bang on. It will hit a 6” Target every time at 250 yards on the first shot. *EDIT TO ADD*. I walked out to my range about 2 weeks ago and saw a ruffed grouse between my 100 and 200 yard targets with the Grouse being closer to the 200 Target. I held half way down its neck and took its head off at what turned out to be 175 yards with a 180 grain Accubond.

Well ok then. With results like that who am I to argue. Now I just have to pick a cartridge and early in the new year I'll buy a Montana.

I have both in 30-06 love them both just use them for different hunts if it’s in the mountains the Montana goes if it is a in and out of the truck day the hunter goes no wrong answer in this one

I remember your original post when you first got that rifle, it's accuracy stuck in my memory. My Mountain Ascent 84L 270 win shoots the same. Cold bore shot being bang on. Always under 1", usually .5" and some .25" 3 shot groups. Amazingly accurate for such a light rifle. Good shot on the grouse btw.
