Thoughts on loading the 160s in the 7mm08???

I just purchased a box an some more VARGET,
on a bit of a whim for the price of the 160s being $60 per 100ct . Mostly for a standby, particularly for Stalking Sambar....

My Adi data shows 36.5 up to 39gr of 2208 / VARGET
But curious to hear if others have tried this Combo of 160 in a Kimber?

Any luck?

Thanks alot

I have in the past, don't really recall the load data though. I do run 168 gr bullets in my 7mm-08 VLS with varget. Hodgson claims 40 gr, but 39 is max in my rifle. Pretty sure the powder I used in my 160 gr loads was BL (C) 2. Likely similar charges, the burn rate is pretty close. FWIW. - dan

i pushed a few loads out this morning after a quick look around an listen for the fallow rut..

i loaded 36.5 varget and 37g varget,..... to dismal results but maybe its the brass i speak of elsehwere. picking up new once fired today.

charge seems like its low with a 70mm coal have what seems plenty of space in the case... the max says 39 grains, so im going to load up again in new brass an see if can improve the groups-- will also change the seating depth / coal as have a little more room in the mag an just went off the 140gr bullet COAL the die was set too actually.... proberly didnt help accuracy department either

I think I was using 39gn of Varget under a Sierra 165gn. Its been a long time since I used Varget for the ~160gn bullets.

If possible I’d use a slower powder like H4350. Lately I’ve been playing with N555 with pretty good results as well.

new brass here, so goin with Win cases, Win LR primer, Varget and the 160gr Speer hot cor....

hoping to have a load to compliment my 140gr core lokt bond load which is zero'd, an can use the dial to bring the 160s up if continues to stay vertically o k

off for brass prep. hunting tomorow

definatley dont need the head scratch confusion but this seems to be what i do, fresh bullets need a run :)

i may try again later date but for now i will settle on 38gr of varget with the 160gr speer bullet in Winchester brass.
it printed a 1.5 inch group maybe a tad smaller after i changed the seating depth a bit further out, it may tighten with another .5 or 1 grain but for all intent an purpose of a stalking round its goin to be fine!

the good bit is the Zero with 140gr ultra bonds (+2in high) leaves the Speer 160 hitting bang on Zero at 100, this also works perfectly for the bush stalking scenerios.

Glad it worked out. 160's at 7mm-08 speeds work very, very well on deer/elk/moose. - dan

ill take your word my man, ive been out a few times but i wasnt succesful on a trophy for the fallow rut with said bullet load, so now shifting focus to the sambar deer through the winter, temps are starting to fall off at night an mild in day so a few more weeks and ill be in to them.

the dog needs some fresh venison though so a shoot this week is on the cards, big sambar hind will be a good test model!

let ya know how i go.

with a little JBM calculator I just confirmed 300 meter and 400 meter drop correction for the Dial on the vx2 :)

dead on at 100, the correction is 7moa at 300 and 11.5 moa at 400........ this is estimated using a 2400 fps Velocity....... Gongs Rang back in agreeance.

im happy with all of that, i dont really plan on shooting out past 300, but it happens from time to time --

Load went to sch1t ...
Gave the barrel a good clean out with patches an next minute.. tight group again.

I musta forgot this Kimber likes clean as barrel!

Was getting worried about my shooting ability there but had another shooter also shooting an it wasn't working...spraying at best.

Cleaned an next 2 were 1cm apart
