Kimber rifles

Two days ago I acquired a Kimber M84 Montana and a new Leupold Vx2 scope for it .And even tho I haven't fired the Montana yet, I'm VERY happy. As soon as I can, I'll get back with a range report. :)

"Pretty to look at,lovely to hold, but if it won't group then consider it sold."
You definitely need to visit the range before you get smitten with it, that goes for any rifle...especially used off the EE.
Good luck!

Any recommendations for Bases/Rings for a Kimber M84 Montana?

(and vendor source of such?)

I like the Leupold Double Dovetail. It gets the scope a little farther ahead, something that I sometimes struggle with. The Kimbers tend to get right lively immediately after the trigger breaks and I'd rather not get swatted by the scope. I've had Talley ring base combinations as well.

I have a Montana 84l in .270 win that the fit and finish is unreal on. Carries like a dream and it shoots most factory rounds in that 1-1.5" groups and federal 150gr premium game kings in to sub MOA consistently. For light rifle the recoil is very pleasant. Also not a blind mag fan but like said before it's not a deal breaker. Looking forward to getting a big mule buck with it this fall.

My first choice is now mostly S&K rings with Leupold DD's a pretty tight second.

Rifle #2 would suit me best, with the scope pushed all the way forward.

I kinda get what you're saying, but really you still have a sweet spot for eye relief so the distance from your noggin to the scope will be the same regardless. I prefer a scope that is further back, otherwise I feel like I'm pulling my head forward for the scope picture. With the scope back and my style of shooting, I feel better on standing shots, perhaps sitting the scope more forward would be better, and prone for sure.

Anyway no thread derail intended, I imagine one day I'll have a montana in the collection. I was more leary of there accuracy, but it appears they've either picked up the QA, or perhaps it was slightly unfounded. Lots of good info out on these guys lately.

Nice rifles! What calibers are they chambered for?

Yes, S&K mounts/rings are superb (right up there with Conetrol).

On my other rifles (e.g. Sako, Win70, RugerM77, Rem700), I prefer medium height mounts (I really like the Burris Signature Zee rings with the inserts).
However, many (most?) Kimber Montana owners posting on various sites seem to prefer low rings (e.g. low Talleys) for their rifles.
So I'm curious. Is there something unusual or special about the Kimber stock shape that encourages a low scope mount to effect an optimal cheek weld?
Or maybe these shooters much happier with a minimal bolt/scope clearance than I am .. lol.

Sometimes the low rings give more bolt handle/ scope/thumb clearance than the high rings. This example isn't a Kimber, but I don't have a lot of highs on identical rifles to compare.

Back in the "Dark years" when I had a predominance of bushnell and B&L scopes I would have agreed with you. I've got long arms and neck and can crawl all over a stock to get within biting range of a short eye-relief scope. I've got plenty of scars to prove it.

The Leupolds that have taken over, then enthusiastically multiplied created a different situation. In some cases I would feel myself creeping backwards just past natural to get far enough away from the scope. Gaining a 1/2 inch or so on the mounting can sometimes make the difference between needing to extend the stock on a heavy kicker.

You guys are making me want to pop the cherry on this Kimber. It's just too darn nice, cripes I wash my hands before I pick it up...
