Kimber ring bases *ALERT*

I picked up a set of Kimber's bases for for my new Montana 8400. SIR advertises them as Duel Dovetail. They're not, they take std Leupold rings. I decided to go with them anyways.

Once I tightened them down I thought the rear base looked a little low. I mounted my lapping tool and sure enough it's tilted. The rear is low, maybe 1/8" or a bit less. I'm glad I like to mount the tool before I mount the scope. Not something I want to do to a brand new Kahles.

I've also thought it weird that the bases don't sit flush. They are raised so there is a curved gap. I think I see them like this in a pic I found so originally I dismissed it.

I ordered the bases for the short action out of the catalog. The cat number sticker on the package matches. SIR says they are the right ones as far as they know. I emailed Kimber. Still waiting for a reply and I've been busy in the day so I haven't called back east.

Has anyone used these mounts for their Montana? What is the part number of the correct ones? I'd like to stay with this system but I will get impatient quickly because I want to start loading and shooting soon. There are other options I can easily go with.

Kimbers site doesn't really help this question.

Well I got to the bottom of it. Just a lack of information and mistakes on SIR's part.

My Montana is in WSM. SIR offers the Kimber bases in standard and short action. I ordered the short action. For some reason Kimber uses the standard action bases for the WSM. SIR doesn't explain this in their catalog.

For anyone going to order the Kimber bases this may help you avoid the head ache. Also, SIR says they are Dual Dovetail. They are not. They are standard with the rear base having the windage just like Leups.

Solid bases none the less. Wish they didnt leave out all this information though. add 3 extra weeks to the wait for the first trip to the range with my new rifle and scope.

You may want to edit the title of your post. Kimber has done nothing wrong, yet people browsing through this forum may take " Kimber ring bases *ALERT*" to heart when they've done nothing.

I see you having two options from now on - a) shop local and stop the mail order, or b) go custom

:)

Well, living where very little is offered is a problem. I can get gas 20 minutes from here though.....:runaway:

Custom? Well I'd hate to have to send the whole rifle back because it can't shoot ammo safely or something!!:D ;)

I could of ordered these bases from Wholesale. They had them and may even of sent the correct ones. I saw SIR offer Dual Dovetails and wanted those instead. They mixed up the info in their catalog.
