Kind of a newbie question

So far I've figured out that the budget for getting back into shooting with a decent Black/Green rifle is about $2000, minimum. I'm not a huge fan of .223, especially in the bush in B.C. ( Somehow I think any of the large and nasty critters out there won't be impressed) So, my question is, using a figure of $2,000 how much can be done with an M305 to make it relatively portable, accurate and utterly reliable. I know this has probably been partially addressed in various other posts, but what are the range of options available and the costs involved. I'm thinking of a "general purpose rifle"- in the bush one weekend, at the range the next. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Basically how far will my 2 grand get me?

With a 305, a long ways. You can certainly accessorize one to your heart's content, but there isn't much that HAS to be done to meet your criteria. As is, they are acceptably accurate, and don't have reliability issues. If you want the rifle to be a bit more compact, the barrel can be bobbed to 18 1/2" +, with a front sight unit to replace the gas cylinder lock. Many folks find the genuine Manchurian chu wood stocks to be unappealing, but a GI synthetic is not expensive, and will accept bedding compound - as will the original stock. Make sure the rear sight tracks properly and doesn't shift. Rooster 33 operating spring guides are well thought of.

hell my m-305 has only a scope and mount but other then that it is stock.
i have also already got a bear, deer, and caribou with it.
mine shoots just fine with out all the extras but it is heavy and im thinking on geting a fiber glass stock.
talk to ya all later

If you do the work yourself, you don't have to spend much at all. The M305 is about $465 to your door. Bed the action front and rear, shim the gas system (shims are $8.50 from me), tune the trigger if you know how or send to me for tuning.

In its orig form, you can have just what you want using open sights for dirt cheap. Of course, you can bling to your hearts delight and spend beaucoup bucks.

See Ardents post below for more info.
