Kinda noob question

What is the principal difference between a Picatinny style scope rail and a Weaver?
Can a Picatinny accept Weaver rings?
I was given a pair of very nice quick release 30mm. rings in Picatinny mount by a friend who said he didn't have any use for them, all his accessories being Weaver style.
Now, where could I find a steel Picatinny rail for mounting atop my 870 Rem?
Can these be bought in length as blanks for custom installation?

I've seen picatinny rail blanks for sale at The shooting Edge i think they had got them from Nightforce.

AFAIK, the major difference is that the cross slot spacing on the Picatinny are standardized. The dovetail patterns are essentially the same.

One has grooves that are slightly rounded, one is cut more square (Weaver vs. Pic). You can use Weaver rings on the Pic mount, but not the other way around, if memory serves. - dan

I was under the impression that Weaver rings could be used on Picatinny rails.
I intend to mount such a rail on my 870 and maybe machine something for my VZ-858, using a Picatinny rail as mounting base.
