Kitty litter uses after use

I picked up a bag of No Name "Green" Kitty litter from the local grocery store. Its ground walnut. I use an RCBS Mega Tumbler (ok bigger than I thought and/or really needed but it works great, just don't need to use it very ofter as it does such a big load). After two loads (yes, first time using it), the media is looking pretty dark and may not be working as well as it should, so I decided to empty it out and get rid of it. Now my question is, how do I get rid of it? I was thinking I could throw it out in the compost, but it has brasso on it. Could I use it as it was initially intended as a litter for the cats??

I'd keep using it. Mine gets dark and grey from adding a mag polish but it will clean far more than 2 loads. If you have to leave for more than 3 or 4 hours to clean the brass THEN it's time to trash it.

If you don't add a polish to it, it doesn't dirty as fast. The polish takes a microscopic layer off the brass but deposits the remnants onto the walnut.

I get 15-20 runs out of my media.

Do you own......what are those things called.........oh yea, a garbage can?? :D

2 uses???? man, my media is pretty much black. I put in an ounce of NuFinish car polish with each load of around 100 300win mag brass and they keep coming out shinny. As long as they're clean, I'll keep using it. I've got to have 15 or 20 loads through the batch I'm using now.

Toss a couple of used dryer sheets in the next tumbler batch. Learned that trick here and it works. I get at least 10 uses out of a jug of Lyman media.

I could be wrong but I believe "BRASSO" is not the preferred polish for cartridge cases as it has Ammonia in it and that weakens the case somehow. The cases will polish with nothing but the media, it just takes a little longer, maybe an hour or so more.

There's not enough ammonia in a teaspoon or two of brasso to harm you brass.

Not trying to hi jack the thread but on the topic of time I was wondering how long should I be leaving a load of brass in my tumbler . I have a Lee tumbler with the self cleaning hole ( don't ask about the time I forgot to put the plug back in). I had the last batch running about 2 1/2 -3 hrs and it still wasen't bright as I see others . Is this just not long enough or am I doing something wrong?

Shorty

Wasn't as bright? But was it clean? Do you use an additive for polishing?

If the outside of the necks are clean (not sooty) then the rest of the case will be clean.

Your brass doesn't have to be shiny to be clean. That being said, I polish the #### out of mine until they gleam :D I like shiny brass too.

Leave it overnight. It will be shiney in the morning.

Back on topic, tumbling cleans the brass and removes anything that might be toxic (primer residue for one). Throw it out when you are finished with it, there are less nasty things to re-cycle if you feel the urge.

x3 - I leave 'em in overnight too like Joe-NWT. I like shiny little gems also.

As for the cat and lead poisoning....well......it could happen ....either slowly or somewhere around 3600fps...:D

I fill my tumber up to the top with media and then add a bit of brasso to the media... my brass comes out brand new there has not been any effects to the brass yet. It also seems to cut brass tumbling time in half...

Nulook something I guess it worth a try...
