Figured this may be worth posting in case anyone else is interested in tackling it. Purchased the kit as I couldn't find a set of rings that didn't require a bit of sacrifice with regards to height, plus DIY is more fun than simply bolting something on.
First up was initial cutout, did a pretty sad job at this. Sloppy bandsaw blade, even sloppier operator resulted in a little extra work.
Fill with 3m pc9323 with glass media, sand to fit.
Layout for receiver install, drill out pillar holes and access for lazy man milling machine.
Next up I simple used a rotary file and moved the vise around the cutter. It hindsight jigging it in a mill probably would've been marginally quicker, but this got the job done.
Next up lock-bolt hole.
Bed the receiver and upper plate into stock, along with a final layer of potting compound to fill gaps.
Final paint, and it's back in action.
Only downside I've found so far is that the riser where I have it set will not allow for the bolt to be removed from the action. I'll likely add an aluminum thumb screw to make the entire setup tool free to alleviate this.
