Hello fellow CGNers. I just purchased a used KAC upper but would like to change the stock URX handguard out for another. Does anyone have a KAC barrel nut wrench sitting around I could borrow for a couple weeks? I would of course pay shipping both ways.

I am located in Victoria if anyone local has one.

Thanks in advance.

It helps a lot to use a heat gun on the barrel nut before you try to break it free

Easy to bugger up the barrel nut ( new nuts are aluminum )

IF you you do bugger it up its a pain to replace on the legacy SR15 with the pressed on gas blocks

Thanks for the tip, I'll heat it up first. It looks like the gas block actualy sits up into the rail. I am guessing I wil have to unpin the gas block before I can take the rail off?

If needed you can send it to us and we can do it for you.

We have two KAC Armorers on staff.

Thanks, I'll give it a go first. Do you happen to know if the BCM KMR will fit over the gas block on the model with the URX II? It's the 11.5 CQB version.

I love knights gear but good lord, they're like the Ducati of the AR15 market. A 300 dollar plus rail and they can't even supply the buyer with a wrench.

If you are trying to swap with another KAC URX non need to unpin ( keep in mind early generation SR15 had pressed on gas blocks ...current gen are double pinned )

The URX install system is unique in the fact that the URX screws onto the uppers threads . The URX barrel nuts threads are on the OD ( opposite from everyone else ! )

When you remove the barrel nut, you can pull the barrel out . You then unscrew the URX from the receiver. Keep in mind its also has thread locker

So to answer your question, no you don't need to remove the gas block to take rail off

Problem you have is if you plan to replace with a non URX hand guard then you need the gas block off to get the proprietary barrel nut off

Again, if you are double pinned you are GTG . The older ones need to be pressed with a hydraulic press

IF you replace with URX you can get away with reusing barrel nut ( according to KAC )

I have PRI , DD Lite proprietary wrenches ...they are all cheap laser cut sheet metal

Due to the nature of the URX barrel nut ....11 relatively small recesses

The fit of the barrel nut is super precise ....much much tighter than lets say a 1/2" hex bolt on a 1/2" socket

It actually snaps over the nut with ZERO play

It needs to be like this because nut is aluminum and it would be buggered quickly if it was not made of hardened tool steel ( looks like a crow foot flare nut that would "open up" and ruin the nut if it wasn't hardened )

If you look at the CNC machine work on the wrench you would know why its not free

Lastly, it cannot have any free play because you only have a limited arc of movement within the confines of the URX to access the nut

If you ever work on cars you will know how this can mess you up....your move the ratchet / wrench in tight confines of engine compartment but nut barely turns

I have both KAC and DW Wilson aftermarket .....the DW Wilson works just as good IMO for a bit less $$

Had to buy it since I lent my KAC out and never got it back

TRG-42, thanks for the info. The gas block is double pinned. Will a blow dryer heat be enough or should I use a torch to heat up the nut? Thanks again...

KAC told me "14 amp heat gun " ....which means the ones you buy to drip paint etc

They also told me that after 60 ft / lbs you end up damaging the aluminum nut ...which is why you want to do everything you can to minimize the torque needed.

The installation called for blue loctitie on barrel nut and receiver extension , so you have an idea why the heat gun is needed.
