Knoxx Spec Op stock question

I've had a Fabarms 14" Martial Pro Forces for about a year now, and have enjoyed shooting it. Even hunted turkeys with it a few times, with the extended full choke. A great gun, and surprisingly comfortable to shoot.

Yesterday I got the Knoxx recoil-reducing pistol grip stock (at Target Sports) and mounted it without problems on my Norinco HP9 14" gun. I figured that if the Fabarm was soft to shoot, then this would turn the Norinco into a real pussycat...just the thing to get my wife interested in shotgunning.

WTF??? Felt recoil on the shoulder is not noticeably different, and worse yet, my cheek is taking a vicious pounding. I set the length of pull the same as the Fabarm, to make the comparison as fair as possible. When laid down side by side, the angle of the comb is virtually identical. Still, smack in the face is far more violent than either the Fabarm, or the Norinco with the standard stock. I don't get it. What am I missing here?

I was thinking of one of these stocks on my 870 slug gun for deer season, as I find the pistol grip very comfortable for extended sits, but the idea of a Winchester Partition Gold slug with this beast is downright frightening.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, don't pull the specops in tight to begin with. If you compress it you don't allow the recoil mechanisms to work. Cheek slap is pretty well known for certain people with the specops, remember that the gun moves back, so if your cheek is too far forward you'll get the stock in the face.

The powerpak gives you a bit more space for your cheek also if all else fails.

Its all about letting the stock do the work,if you pull it in tight and hold on for dear life waiting to feel the recoil then it dont work.
Ride the recoil.
Allso if you want one for your fabarms, there will be an adaptor o nthe market soon that will let you use the knoxx 870 stock on the fabarms.

I had a Knoxx Spec-Op on my 14" 870 and I can say that it made a HUGE difference in felt recoil. Now this may sound silly, but Knoxx also makes an almost identical stock that is just an adjustable LOP pistol grip stock, no recoil reduction. Are you sure you bought the recoil-reducing version? Just a thought....

I have shot a 590 and a 870, it makes a huge differance, like they said above, ride the gun and let the stock do the work. Also be careful of where you put your cheek. You are going to have to relearn how to shoot the gun.

I plan on putting a Limbsaver pad on my spec ops stock to make it even nicer to shoot.

+1 on the stock - I like it so much I bought another stock for an 870 (just in case I get another 870) :D I am serious.

Like I have said many times before, Knoxx's claim are quite exaggerated. While it is a great product I got more out of just my R3 pad than the Knoxx with their stiff recoil pad. Everyone covered the other points like relearning to shoot so yeah, toss on a pachmyr or R3 pad and then you will have a little closer to "95%" felt recoil reduction.

Well if I find a Limbsaver pad that fits (I am pretty sure the medium grind to fit is almost perfect), I will have the WussMaster 2000 :D

Thanks for the input, gents. I should have mentioned that I'm more of a rifle shooter than a shotgunner, and have fewer problems with big-bore rifles than with shotties. I have two .375 H&H's (Ruger #1 and Brno) and find both of them easier to shoot than an 870 with Partition Gold slugs. I can also put a box or so through my .416 Rigby model 77 before I begin to cringe. In most cases, recoil isn't a huge problem for me, and the first place that I feel it is usually my shoulder, not my face.

I appreciate the tactfulness of the suggestion regarding having the wrong stock, but this is definitely the recoil-reducing model. I'm holding it firmly, but it's not a white-knuckled death grip. Definitely not compressing it. Knowing what I now do, I would have gone with the standard pistol-grip version (Target Sports had them in stock as well).

I've got the Limbsaver on a couple of other guns, and find it very effective. For now, I've gone back to the original stock and mounted a grind-to-fit Limbsaver on it. Wish I'd done that in the first place.

I'm going to experiment with this gizmo a bit further. My cheekweld will be a bit different with a scoped gun (for slugs) so I may try that.
