Hi there,

Has anyone purchased one of the modified SKS-KD Classic or KD Deluxe rifles from Kodiak Defence in Windsor, Ontario? If so, what is your take on them? I've almost given up finding a SKS-D or M, so this might be the avenue to go. My wife would say I need another SKS like I need a hole in the head, but I do have a soft spot for that rifle. Best bang for the buck these days, in my opinion.

Thanks!

I just found out about this rifle today, but I can't seem to find any reviews online. There is one video on YouTube on how to disassemble it, but no reviews on how well it actually works.

Mini-30s are crazy expensive, and VZ58s are practically impossible to find these days, so this looks like it would be a good alternative.

Has anyone tried it yet?

If your looking for the sks-d for the ak mag release i would hold out for the sks-d over the kodiak. The kodiak looks like it does use ak mags but still uses the sks mag release where you have to pull pack on the lever instead of a paddle you push forward like on the ak

the KD is a bubba special, Dont even see the reason behind it...lol... you're still stuck with 5 round mags...LMFAO...

SKS-D arent that cool either. I have one and It just sits in the back of my safe. I hit the range once with it and quickly realised it was all just hype.... hahahahah....

the Kodiak actually uses xcr mags so being that there is an xcr pistol in 7.622x39 you would be able to use 10 rounders, but that being said you could pay a couple hundred and get an adapter from magwedge that will let your sks use xcr pistol mags

VZ 58s arnt hard to find...... Calgary shooting center had one (if not many) just the other day when I was there.

And why do you want the Kodiak ? IF it isnt really because of the AK mags then why not buy a stock SKS and modify it the way you see fit ? there are 2 companys in Canada that sell drop in mag releases for the SKS that work like an AK's, they also sell "duckbilless" adapters that allow you to remove the plastic duckbills on your SKS mags so they become pretty much a plastic AK mag. Except youll still get the last round bolt hold open feature, whereas the model D and Kodiak KD with AK mags most likely does NOT have last round hold open.

I tried that already without much success. I like shooting the 7.62x39 round but I wanted something with a pistol grip and optics rail (bad eyes, can't shoot open sights). I bought a Tula SKS and an ATI Strikeforce stock but the grip feels super cheap and comes loose after about 40 rounds fired. Also, it was a pain in the Arsenal to install everything because none of the parts fit right, so I had to buy a Dremel and adjust everything. I have never been able to make the duckbill mags work so I'm still loading from the top, but because I installed an optics rail I can't load with stripper clips.

To answer your question, personalizing an SKS is more trouble than it's worth IMO, and I would prefer a ready-made affordable solution, and this one seems to check all the boxes.

I just wish someone would tell me about their actual experiences with this gun. I found a 24-page thread buried somewhere on CGN where lots of people commented on how it looks, but not one had actually tried it.

PM me if you want to sell that thing...

I think because for the price, it's not exactly an "affordable" solution. Plus, have you seen the video on how to strip the thing down? Looks like a hassle to me. A $250 sks with a 2.5 Kwikrail and Mag adapter will $500 and do everything you want but the trade off is you gota be a handy with tools or know someone who is. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Ok sure, but when u buy a Kodiak KD your literally getting a stock SKS with a Kwik rail on top of it..... And it takes AK mags. Minus the attraction of AK mags and your basically buying a stock SKS with a $80 rail already installed. You still have no pistol grip. If u wanna watch a review of one check out hunting gear guy on utube. He has a review on the Kodiak KD.

And there you have it, folks... TRUTH.

Not all SKS-Ds have AK-style release, some early ones with blade bayo have SKS-style release.

Have all three....regular SKS...SKS tapco with 5/20 mag...MC-5D AK mag.

The one you shoot for fun, from enjoyable to a PITA...SKS Tapco with a duckbill because it goes in just as easy or easier than an AK mag IMO, the bolt is held open so you can either change mags or simply stripper clip into the mag and you are off shooting again, and you have an adjustable stock so anybody can shoot it...second is stock SKS so you get the hold open and stripper clip usability...last thing that would ever come out for fun would be the AK mag....especially with 5 round caps. That may change with 30 round mags, but not as it is now. If I had three full 5 pinned mags, my guess is that you could get 100 shots off before I got 30 down range.

Just an opinion :)

Crapco duckbill are no way shape or form esier to use...lol.. Neve though I would read that in my life...lol

Unless you are talking about those useless 5 round AK mags that came with it. Those should go straight to the scrap pile.

And seriously just get a CZ858 and forget about the overpriced mall ninja sks

I don't know why dilligaf trolls this forum.... He should really just stay in the Black rifle section cus that's the only place his opinions even start to make sense lol
