I've recently acquired a Korean knockoff scope (says Tasco on the side, but it's not a bloody Tasco, I can almost guarantee it!), 6-24x45mm w/illuminated reticle and AO, complete with rings. I mounted it on my 30-06 about a week ago and ran a couple boxes of ammo through it, and noticed two problems;

1) the adjustable objective lens seems to be out of calibration/adjustment. When focused on an object at 100 yards, the image is extremely fuzzy. I have to turn the indicator back to 25 yards in order to focus the image. Same with other ranges, like 50 yards, 200 yards, etc. This happened after about the 3rd shot, I suspect the recoil knocked the lens out of adjustment.

2) the reticle somehow rotated out of alignment with the scope tube!! Looking through the scope, the reticle is tilted to the left, by quite a bit. I took the eyepiece out (it just screws out) and I can see the reticle, along with the lock ring that's supposed to hold it in place, but I don't have a spanner that will undo the lock ring, and I don't wanna crack the reticle by accident while tightening it. I suspect this problem is also recoil related, since I noticed it towards the end of the 2nd box of ammo.

My question is; Does anyone know of a place that repairs optics, where I could send this thing to get it fixed? It was so freakin' cheap I don't mind spending a bit of money on it. Yes yes yes I know, you get what you pay for, but just answer the damn question, I'm not interested in your $500 Leupold, I want to fix this one. Any help would be much appreciated!!

^ That's the thing though, I'm almost 100% sure that it's a fake, a knockoff, a phoney, y'know? No warranty whatsoever. I didn't recieve a warranty card (or any paperwork at all) with the scope. Can I still send it in to Bushnell then, even though it's a fake Tasco with no warranty? Will they still be able to fix it for me? Hell, I'd be willing to pay for someone to fix it at this point, I don't know how to progress from here.

^ Bought it on eBay, from a seller in hong kong. Can't remember the seller's name. I've since contacted him regarding the issues with the scope, but haven't heard back from him.

Would a camera repair shop have tools/knowledge required to fix this damn thing? Why am I asking instead of looking into it myself...

lol! You want something done right, you gotta do it yourself :p

It just might ba a real Tasco as they will have scopes made wherever they can for the best price and usually somwhere in Asia. Try the repair centre they just might fix it.

I'd send it to Bushnell just for a laugh. It it is one of thiers they'll fix it and if not they'll then at least they will knoe someone if using the Tasco name!!

What? Ask yourself this question honestly...Who, in their right mind would go to all the trouble to actually build AND market a knock-off Tasco? I'm willing to bet it's the real deal.

Here is some info on Tasco from this web page: http://www.charm.net/~kmarsh/brand.html

Florida based Tasco was established in 1954 by founder George Rosenfield, and made a name for itself through the 1960's when it sold good quality Japanese-made scopes for about 75-80% of what similar US made scopes sold for from Redfield, Leupold and later Burris. After selling the company in March 1996, the price (and quality) gap has widened considerably, with the name Tasco becoming an epithet for poor reliability and slow service.

Tasco is (was) trying to enter the middle-end market with their Tactical and World Class model scopes. In their last years, Tasco tried to address mounting quality concerns with a dealer counter exchange program for broken World Class models, and Lifetime Warranties for the rest. This had the happy effect of driving them into liquidation faster, as they never addressed actual product quality.

In 1999-2000, Tasco bought their way into a US Navy/Government contract for sniperscopes, beating out Leupold on cost. They did it using scopes from Hakko, a Japanese shop that builds scopes to spec. In order to beat out competitors on cost, these scopes have only one multicoated lens, the objective, while the rest are single coated. These were available from a few distributors, for a limited time as the Super Sniper. Curiously, they are not marked "Tasco" anywhere on the scope. This scope has a good reputation for adjustment repeatability and overall reliability, but optics are merely good not great. This is probably a better compromise for most shooters than another scope in this price range that has great optics and poor reliability.

At the same time it was bolstering its image with the limited-availability Super Sniper, it moved World Class production from Japan to Taiwan, and from thence to PR China. If you wonder why you hear conflicting reports on Tasco quality...

Contrary to rumour, Tasco was not making scopes for Leupold or vice versa. In fact, Tasco makes no scopes, never has, it only contracts OEM manufacturers to make them and brand them. They could be buying parts from the same manufacturers, but that is irrelevant. Optical shops make products to spec- the more you pay, the better glass, polish, coating, Q/A, fewer optical flaws, etc. you can get. The Hakko-made sniper scope represents Tasco's first modern attempt at a middle-quality scope.

If you have a Tasco scope requiring repair, you need to determine if it was made before September 1, 2002. Tasco/Bushnell Performance Optics introduced a revamped line of riflescopes in 2003, with the Titan line at the top of the lineup and the World Class shuffled down to somewhere under the Target & Varmint line.

Hmmmmm. Sounds like it might be the real deal :p The auction did say "Tasco World Class Riflescope" in the title, so jeez, it might be legit! I'll give the Tasco repair guys a jingle, see what the story is. Thanx for all the help! I'll be sure to post updates as I recieve them, in case anyone cares...
