hey guys... perhaps this should go in reloading... but i'm specifically seeking data from guys shooting with stainless krieger barrels from thier m14 rifles and am wondering what loads/bullet choices these barrels tend to like.
Taking the plunge into reloading and want to narrow my bullet choices down.
for what it's worth, i have a saami spec .308 match, clymer reamed chamber on the DMR SS medium contour 1:12 twist barrel.

anyone??

45ACPking: Nah, leave it here. I would like to see what you Krieger bbl'ed M14 lovers are stuffing. For my last Norc M14's with Douglas NM Hvy bbl's... I shot the Sierra MK 155 gr Palma bullet with about 42.5 gr W735 bulk ball powder from Higginson Powders. Launched them at around 2850 fps give or take. Had great results up to 800yards at Base Boredom's Mons Range! :D

I run a Krieger HB 1-10" that was cryo treated shooting 175 gr @ 2600 fps delivers 3/8 moa groups at 100m but the rifle is not your off the rack model

what type of 175 gr bullet savage?
I've got another build in the works with the full parts kit from an NM stamped, HR isreali "sniper" and will be barrelling that up with the 1:10 krieger cryo ss.

175 SMK mine started as NM Springfield Commercial rifle but I shoot out the NM Barrel the throat erosion gauge showed 7 . You are going to like the Cryo barrel it is nice the 110 really works well with the 175 gr

Did you guys modify your piston, or gas nut to shoot 175s?

No , no modifactions the Gas plug mod IMO is a waste of both time and money as Barnery say your #### wont fall off if don't have one . The Gas piston is about comsistancy much like the Solid OProd spring guide

cool Thanks. All kinds of internet folklore says that m14s max out at 168 if you don't want to damage the op rod. Hearing that you wore out a barrel on 175s prior to killing an op rod pretty much puts that to bed.

What charge were you using behind that BTW?

Which of the Krieger or Douglas barrels would do best with surplus 147-150 FMJ's & the 155 Palma match? If I had to guess, I'd say a 1:12.

176 gr being the ceiling

Carbonrod, I seen what a 180 can do to a a g.i. oprod hehehehe, norcs are forged so might actually hold up better.

Interesting thing about gas pistons, for those of use with G.I. spec gas cylinders , Sadlak now has an NM groove piston especially for 180 gr bullets. It does away with the need for a bleed off gas plug mod.
lengthy article on gas pistons and swapping them out for accuracy over on TFL forum in the states. If anyone wants a link to it, p.m. me

The load I have used for the M1A is 43.5 gr. of varget or 44.5 gr of RE15 topped of a 175 smk. I think a lot a damage to the Oprod is related to the burn rate of the powder in piston driven systems,However using a steady diet of bullets over 180 gr range is not helping the matter any. Most bullets in the 180 gr. + range have pathetic BC performance when shot out of a 308 win case. The only 180 gr.+ bullet thats has great Down Range BC in a 308 Win case is the 185gr Lapua it has an impressive BC at extended ranges

1-12" will deliver great performance in those bullet wieghts with a 1-11" delivering the optimal performance with the bullet wieghts you listed

I installed a Douglas Heavy barrel in mine. My favourite load is 155gr Amax, full-sized IVI brass, WLR, OAL: 2.855" and 44gr of Varget. If I do my part, I can shoot sub-MOA groups all day :) BTW, I also replaced nearly all other components with USGI ones. The major exception is the op-rod and of course receiver. The headspace is very tight at 1.631". Full length sizing is a must for me.

I'll be loading up some AMAX 155, Berger VLD and nosler 155 HPBT and see what she likes.
I've also got a good supply of the 165 through 185 gr bullets..... picked up a few usgi pistons and both the sadlaks as i'm going to do a piston test to see what piston my rifle "chooses" to be the most accurate with..... an often overlooked method of shrinking groups ;) once all the obvious NM alterations have been done.

A note to whoever wants to put an aftermarket barrel on their Norc, don't forget you will need a USGI gas lock and castle nut due to the imperial threads instead of the metric threads.
Just got my Krieger heavy 1:12 barrel (thanks Obtunded) and action back from Jeff at Valley Gunsmith, he did a beautiful job. The barrel, action, oprod, trigger group, gas cylinder, gas lock, nut and USGI flash hider was all Duracoated black. The head space specs out good, bolt won't close on the 308 no-go, indexing and oversized oprod guide are aligned perfectly. The only thing I had to do was shim the gas cylinder for proper gas lock alignment.
Pics to follow.

Hey man, I want pictures!!!! 45apacking too!!!

Where would YOU guys suggest getting a USGI gas block... I wanna do a DMR like 45's

Cheers,

Ian
