Kroil is a one of the best penetrating oils ever made. I have used it for years on aircraft loosing up rusted exhaust systems and turbo charge waste gates. It is not meant as a lubricating oil but as rust breaker. Not having used it myself on firearms, i would suspect the humidity and salt content in the air of the south east US states, is the reason for its popularity as a preventative or remover rust from guns.

penetrating oil= diesel fuel and automatic transmission fluid. cheaper and works every bit as well if not better 60/40% mix.

Cleans the dirtiest barrels. I use Kroil with many patches going through the barrel and it always comes clean (light grey anyways). It's safe for wood and glass stocks. Sometimes with a super dirty (friend's rifle) barrel, I push a Kroil soaked patch through the barrel and let it sit overnight.
Next day, follow up with several patches if JB Bore Paste. Rifle barrel comes out super shiny and clean.
No need to plug the barrel and fill, but that approach is always an option.
Kroil is also a choice of the benchrest community! That can you see will last you near a lifetime.

It's awesome stuff-cleans crud off like i've never seen-I went over all my rifles that were in the safe and you'd think i'd never cleaned them before-and i consider myself pretty anal about cleaning.
CenturyVallen stores sell it-1 tin should last a long long time-it goes on very thin and doesn't take very much-doesn't smell the best though and a good idea to wear gloves when using-I follow up with a lube oil after pulling thru the barrels and cleaning the bolts and it's all good.

Try it, you'll like it!....get the "WHIMIS" on any penetrating oil and compare ingredients to the fuel oil/ tranny lube mix. Very very close. Is it the same,nope, your right. Fraction of the price though and "yep" works the same or better with the absence of waxes that will build up and have to be dissolved with solvents eventually anyhow.
Except for the 5-15% "proprietary ingredients" that they won't list on the MSDS sheet.
Besides, what do those know-it-all benchrest shooters really know about stuff like this?
