In the summer of last year, I contacted a small manufacturer into making metal KSG handguards. The owner/designer/machinist was VERY interested in the idea. However the idea faded away.....I guess making T97 rails and M14 Blackfeather stocks were taking too many spots on the machines.

I decided now is a great time to drum up interests in the shooting community that wants this. The only fatal flaw of the KSG is that its pump action handguard is plastic. The part with plastic rails. If that was all metal, I think people would really want this.

Voice your opinions here. If you think the KSG really needs it, express your interests below my post. If you think it's not worth while, feel free to say so.

Thanks for reading! I hope we can make a difference to KSG owners.

The greatest and I mean GREATEST flaw of the KSG is the foreend is not metal. There have been people injured from using vertical grips that snapped off the plastic rails. My guess would be between $200-300. This is not unreasonable considering AR rails cost even more.

I believe the new Gen II's are reinforced now and at least some of the previous issues of people losing hands / digits was due to knock off or airsoft quality parts that failed as compared to quality products. That notwithstanding, I'd still be seeing where this goes and what kind of design comes about.

As Saryet mentioned, if you look up the details, he was using a poor quality grip.

Needless to say that while the verticle grip is a neat way to run it, I think the most ergonomically Ideal lowprofile cost effective thing is a Magpul XTM handstop kit. Even if you gave me a new handguard I would leave the factory handguard on and go pick up an XTM kit and toss the new metal one in the parts bin.

Keeping it sleek is nice for storage and transport too.

The broken rail is not worst part with the pump. It suck but the gun is still functional.
The worst failure is the plastic broke where the action bar lock in. Rendering the gun useless.

I know Kel-Tec has strengthened the contact point but it still a high stress area.

I don't think it's the greatest flaw... I would certainly prefer a polymer forend over a slab of 6061 or 7075... increased weight at the wrong end of the gun, and the absence of thermal neutrality make the alloy forend a non-requirement. I'm more than happy with the plastic on my KSG. In my opinion, the greatest shortcoming of the KSG is it's inability to automatically switch from one tube to the other... Other than that, the gun is good in my books.

Good luck in your endeavour...

Cheers,

M

I REALLY want to like the ksg. But there's too much plastic on there. I like my shotguns to be metal and wood, with a little polymer. The utas is even worse for plastic.
