Planning a trip for caribou for the 2014 season. Looking for recommendations on an outfitter. Most of us will be from Manitoba and 1 or 2 from Alberta. Looking online so far I've come acoss some nice places but a little to rich for my blood at the $8,000-$10,000 mark. We're not looking for 5 star accommodations or anything, a wall tent and cook your own meals is fine with us. Let me know your experiances and if you could shoot me a PM with the cost that would be awesome. Lots of time to plan and find a descent place yet though. We'd probably do it ourselves but with non-residents its a non-issue as we need an outfitter. Thanks guys.

I think you'll find if you want to go with non-residents in your group you will have to go with the big lodges. Which of course equals much more money. The only caribou outfitters that I know of in Manitoba that have more econimal hunts, ie tent camps etc, only accomodate resident hunters. These hunts provided for residents in tent camps usualy run in the $3000-$3500 range. Different outfitters offer different things, different prices, some you supply your own food, others supply food for you etc. I've been up the last three years in a row, but will be taking next fall off only because I didn't book early enough for 2013. The outfitter I go with was already almost fully booked for the 2014 season back in September, so I made sure to book when I was still in camp.

We are doing late september, with caribou country adventures. Unfortunately our buddies from Alberta will not be coming on this one. It is too bad that the big outfitters that can take non residents charge so much. Looking forward to the fishing and bird hunting almost as much as the caribou part.

I'm thinking I'll be using the muzzleloader if I can, and not sure if I'll take the 6.5x55 or the 270 as back up. If you go to YouTube they have lots of video of their hunts. Sent a few emails and talked to allan and he seems really laid back and a pretty good guy. We are the last group in and there will be 4 of us so it will be great.

Ill have to check that one out. Is your hunt going to be guided or not? I was thinking of going non guided MB resident with Munroe lake lodge (dont remember the guys name) but for an extra $2k or so you got a guide and food, and cabin included, and didnt have to worry about anyone backing out and having to cover his share of the plane cost. Which was appealing to me as I didnt have guys who could 100% commit. Sounds like a great time, Im curious to hear how it goes.

Ron and Allan are excellent guys and run a great camp. They are the outfitter that our group goes with. You'll really enjoy it. When are you guys going up? Our group is booked in for the second camp in 2014, we fly in on the 6th or 7th, I don't remember the exact date off hand. Here's a few pics of some of the animals that we've taken over the last 3 years.

Great looking animals, we're in the 20-24th. It's my first time, and it's always been one of those ones that we always say we are going to do, but then everyone backs out when it is time to put your money where your mouth is. We finally said @#!*? It, and just the guys who actually put up cash are it. I'm thinking it's going to be a long wait!

Ya we're the last camp, and we are going to take all the spots. Me, my father, my uncle and a buddy are going. We didn't think we could get 6 guys to commit to actually going so 4 worked out for us perfectly.

Still waiting to hear what its going to cost you :) I hope to do one some day but was looking at doing it in Quebec. They are far from cheap in the fall though - about $6k or more! I might have to do a winter hunt but I'm not sure I'd enjoy the weather that much!

We're probably looking between $3,000-$4,000 by the time it is all said and done. Unfortunatly for a non-resident you would be looking at closer to $10k I would say. Wether you went to Quebec, Manitoba or BC. They've kind of got you by the short and curlies unless you're a resident. We also looked at doing a late season trip on our own, and we will eventually, but I was looking more for the "fly in experiance" on this one. Plus I wasn't really looking forward to the -40 in a tent. Did it for moose this year and that was enough for a while!

Late season Caribou isn't that cold =P

We hunted the first week of February, just outside of Brochet. Was a balmy -15 when we arrived...dropped to about -45 (with windchill) the day we left with 8 caribou aboard :)

Good luck on your hunt!

Jimmy

We did a December moose hunt this year. The day we arrived it was -36 - no windchill, and the day we left it was -38. If I can avoid that for a while I will. But saying that we will do the late season one in a couple of years, once I forget what -40 feels like - lol
