As the title says; I imagine the stock is cut right in front of or middle of the solid portion of the forend, but can't find measurements anywhere.

The stock band on the No4 is in a different place than the L42. You can't make one from the other without lots of woodwork. If anything, you need to start with a No.9 .22LR foreend. The No.7 is a No.4 variant and the No.8 was a failed factory attempt to create a 7.62x51 version of the No.4.

The Military Collectors forum (www dot milsurps.com), has a couple of photo galleries on the L42, and many knowledgible forum members.

No no no!

The L42 front band is in exactly the same place as a no4 mid band.

The stock is cut about 1/2" ahead of the front of the recess.

A No8 is a .22 trainer using a no4 or no5 based action but using a totally different trigger and sear mechanism.

The L8 family is the standard no4 converted to 7.62 NATO. They were simply rebarreled with (apparently) Canadian Arsenals Limited supplied DCRA type 7.62 barrels.

The conversion programme from No4T to L42 was, as we all know, undertaken in several tranches at Enfield between 1970 and 81. The butts, if they were serviceable, remained with the original rifle and the same applied to the fore-ends but unlike the butts, the fore-ends were to be modified by an outside contractor.

I took this to mean that the No4 forend is the same in the L42, re figured. That's Peter Laidler, above.

I've never once handled a full wood Lee Enfield, only sporters -- where location-wise is the mid band, referencing the internal layout of the stock, which doesn't get changed on most sporters?
