Hey, does anybody know if there are any L42A1's in this country at all and if I might have even the slightest chance of latching on to one? Or am I stuck with only dreaming?

Collectors Source in Ontario was one importer. There were @20 L42a1s registered in the country IIRC.

And they are alot more expensive than the $1100 that I DIDN'T pay for one in the mid '90s.

Have one in the transit chest, with all ancillaries (minus the L1A1 IWS night sight scope). "Rare" is not an adequate descriptor.

The story goes that one of the UK Crown assets dealers that was buying them in large lots, was discovered to be shipping them to unfriendly sources. As a result, no further L42A1's were/are to be released to the public. All remaining surplus rifles in inventory are to be destroyed.

So the story goes.....

There was only about 1200 made. There are a few in country that I know of. One of the dealers (Epps?) had one a couple of years ago. If memeory serves me it was about $4k. There was a beautiful all matched one with every single piece of equipment for sale locally a year or so ago. I played with it and lusted after it but the price was $5.7k and I could not justify that mush money on a rifle. I thinl it went to a collector in the Okanagan at more than the asking price. You can make a decent looking clone for a lot less.

I was told Wolverine had one for a while a few years ago and dragged it around from gun show to gun show with little interest shown.

I owned one for about 8 years.

It was gorgeous. Complete in the transit case and built on a Longbranch T action - wanna talk about being rare!

I actually regret ever getting rid of it, and sometimes my Longbranch T's as well. All of them were good shooter's.

Mine now resides with a US collector - he had to jump through hoops to get it down there.

They are around - just don't expect to see them all the time and probably for close to $6000 easy if not a lot more.

Cheers, Carl

Yep $6000 and up. Alot were, as tps50701 said, taken to the US....

We are slowly loosing our Milsurplus to the USA.

Did your L42A1 built on a Long Branch T rifle still have the L Long Branch serial number? Or did the Brits renumber it?

Man, that would have been something to hang on to.

Yep, and if I recall correctly it was priced at just $1800 too. The regular Ts went for about $800-1200 back then mind you. By the time I decided that I had better buy it, it was, of course, gone.

I remember seeing one at Kearns and McMurchy back then as well. Price was about the same, although they were having to send the scope back to Britain for repair for some reason.

This is one I used to have that I purchased from Manton Arms in the UK in 1990. Sold it about 2 years ago. It did not shoot that well. I enjoyed my experience with it and it was nice to have in my collection for so many years. Came time to enjoy something else and I did not mind letting it go to fund another project.
