LaFrance M14K

"Ron Smith (Smith Enterprise, Inc.) built the systems originally sold by Tim LaFrance."

I am on the waiting list if SEI decides to make the K gun again. I'm not holding my breath though...

Not that we'll ever see them here, but how costly was a semi version of the M14K?

The old ones are rare collector items and I think one sold on Gun Broker about two years ago (pre-Obama) for something like $6K.

I think SEI is waiting until the have their own bolts and receivers on the market before the K gun goes back into production.

Also...

My conversations with Ron Smith have revealed that SAGE is working on an EBR stock for the K gun.
The EBRK stock is on the back burner because SAGE is working hard to keep up with the demand TACOM-RI has put on them.

As a semi auto, none other than collector value.

But, originally, they were designed as a full auto. They were engineered to work reliably as a full auto gun. The one in the ad is one of the semi auto ones that were sold to the public in the US.

If they had used the M14 gas system with that shortened barrel, the gun would have pounded itself into junk in short order. The M60 gas cylinder gave it enough mechanical delay to drop the cyclic rate to 650 rpm and between that, the custom brake and a Pachmyr recoil pad, made the gun very controllable and pleasant to fire. A very big improvement over the original M14 military rifle in full auto.

Of course, the short barrel dropped the muzzle velocity to like 2500 fps, quite a drop in range and energy as a tradeoff...

Such guns a Canadian can only dream about...:(

Lazerus- I suspect that someone agreed with you, thus the rarity of the M14K. ;)

OK,
this is a very neat firearm,
a wonderful exercise in ingenuity and skill,
to show how small an M14 can get.
but,
What exactly is the tactical role for this weapon?
What is the muzzle velocity of 7.62 NATO ammunition fired out of a 16" or shorter barrel?

Once you get below approximately 18" with full powered 7.62 NATO/.308 Win ammo, the point of diminishing returns is quickly reached, with muzzle blast and flash going up, and ballistic efficiency going down.

If you want a firearm that hits like a Ruger Mini 30 ...
why not just get the lighter, more compact, handier, lighter recoiling Mini 30?

Or better yet, for maximum ballistic efficiency, keep a full length barrel on your full powered M14, and if you need a shorter, more compact delivery platform, go to a bullpup stock.

These opinions are coming from a guy who has a tremendous respect for M14 short rifles, and who has chopped up dozens of M14 rifles into 18.5" Shorties. At that length, in a wood or fiberglass stock, a shorty M14 will balance superbly. Even better, with a pistol grip folding stock, the M14 shorty becomes, IMHO, the perfect all around rifle.

as usual,
opinions expressed on the internet may be worth less than you paid for them,
and
YPMMV!
