Hey guys

So I acquired this gun off the EE, had some undisclosed damage main thing I wanna fix is this Crack on the butt. Don't think it'll effect accuracy or anything but haven't had a chance to test the gun out. Anyways guns a savage 93R17 GV, 17HMR so not worried about recoil making the Crack worse. Just wondering how or if you'd all bother fixing this deficiency. I just hand screwed the sling stud swivel in so I can easily remove it. I plan on doing some sort of refinishing then JB welding the sling stud in.

I'd fix the rear crack with colored acraglass, it almost looks like the rear swivel stud was put in without relief hole for the unthreaded top portion or an undersized pilot hole or the stud. For the front chip it would be difficult to repair but you could reprofile the stock on both sides to make it go away.

Crack in the butt stock: Glue it together with some two component glue will be enough, then drill a hole for the sling stud.

The front, I would just sand it into shape (both sides), then refinish.

Remove the sling stud. It was installed too close to the end and likely due to reasons laid out by hunter above, caused the split. I’d just use Titebond III waterproof glue. Likely need card stock and/or an air hose to blow the glue into the crack and clamp it. I’d install the sling stud further forward.

Front is ugly but I wouldn’t be too bothered. You could use wood filler or try to glue in a small piece of wood that matches. Furniture restorers also use coloured wax sticks to fill in things like gouges, could be an option as well.

The crack in the butt stock .... Hot stuff glue ... Remove the recoil pad as well and clamp it
the screw from the butt pad and sling stud screw is too close to the end and thats why it split / or drilled hole was too small for the size if the screw

The hole in the butt stock is counter sunk, therefore if you move it forward, you'll have another problem.

Leave it where it is, but drill an appropriate hole for the stud, once the butt stock is glued together.

Don't get to carried away, thin down some Gorilla Glue with acetone, use a wet cloth to get some water down into the crack and force in some GG.

Do this before taking out the sling stud.

Once you've got enough GG into the crack, take out the sling stud, lay the stock on its side and add some weight to compress the crack together.

Leave it for 24 hours, come back and scrap away the GG foam and that crack will be invisible.

Even simpler, squirt some Crazy Glue into the crack, remove the stud and compress for ten minutes.

That chip out of the fore end will be trickier

This is your best advice - laminate stocks are made with 2 part resin or epoxy - use a 2 part epoxy to fix the split (it's not a crack, the layers have separated) if you put the swivel back in the same hole, you will just be forcing the split open again. move it further up and drill a clearance hole first - if it is one of those tapered stud, use a step drill. It is too far back as it is anyway. drill the old hole out with a brad point and fill it with a dowel.

The front is harder - you will never patch that invisibly, either re-profile the fore end or chop that bit off and put an ebony nose cap on it. (you could also fit a steel cap, pour a pewter cap or ebonize some walnut)

Thanks for the remedies, advice and PMs. I'll try the titebond for the split in the butt. Drill out the stid swivel and put a piece of dowel in. See how that looks and go from there.

Yes titebond 3, in test it's better than epoxy for bonding, epoxy resin for a filler.
