Thus far, I have finished my Boyds laminate stocks using Polyurethane spray with very good results. However, I'm wondering if anyone has ever used Birchwood Casey's Tru-Oil gun stock finish on a laminate? I seem to recall reading that the linseed oil can cause separation of the bond between the laminates. I could be wrong too, but better be safe than sorry.

I used tru-oil on a richards microfit. IIRC, it is what was reccomended on there site. This is how it turned out, back before i knew how to photograph a gun.

I looked at one a buddy did.It turned out fine and as far as I know never separated.
This is a grey/black stock I dyed green and finished with satin bowling alley finish.

I cut my True-Oil with BLO upon the recomendation of a local smith. It's a bit thinner going on. I like it.

Dennis Sorenson uses this method. He sent it to me a while back. I like it better than True-Oil.

Use Flecto Varathane #66 Oil Finish

-Sand to 220 grit.
-Flood stock w/finish for about 20min.
-Keep wet as it soaks in at different rates at differnt places.
-Then just wipe it (not dry), but so it is not wet and let stand overnight.
-Repeat above and let stand a couple days.
-Lightly sand with 400 grit wet/dry paper & use the #66 as a wetting agent.
-Do small areas at a time and wipe dry.
-When it looks evenly dull, don't sand that area any more.
-If stock has not been filled enough, just use more finish and let it dry before wet/dry sanding it again.
-At the very end of it all you can rub a bit of finish on by hand and kind of polish the dull a bit.

What did you use for the dye?

A good way to change a nice gray laminate stock to a green hue is to finish the stock using any product containing urethane.(eg Deft Marine Teak oil). Apparently the urethane reacts with the gray dye.

Nice stocks guys. I especially like that green die job by RR. I might even try that sometime, but for now I'll go with straight Tru-Oil as the stock that I'm doing is a Royal from Boyds (purple) for my kid.
