Why does laminate get a premium price on an SKS. I love the deep colour of hardwood and only buy hardwood, yet laminate appears to get a premium. It’s fake wood. Can’t figure it out?

I think most people like the look of the laminate better. To me it doesn't seem as strong as the hardwood
I have both types and the laminate seems more flimsy in the middle around the magwell.

Personal preference for the hardwood for looks. I've read that the hardwood has a tendency to break around the hand grip area, and that's why you see the second cross bolt at that location in the laminate stocks.
I think the price difference takes that into consideration and the fact that most people prefer the laminate look.

I'd say the Laminated wood is stronger but the Hardwood is nicer. mind you I have seen some really nice original red stained Russian laminated stocks before.as for costing more money those that are selling the laminated ones for more money are doing so because they are a more durable stock . from what I know they won't warp like the hardwood might be inclined to do.

Laminate can look nicer... its much stronger and it doesn't bang out behind the back of the receiver (all my hardwood stocked ones became so banged out after heavy use the receiver wood slide back and forth in the stock.

I like the hardwood stock for esthetic reasons, but accept that laminated are more durable.
A bit of walnut stain and a whole bunch of linseed oil makes for a gorgeous hardwood stock.

I have seen one laminate that looks as good as birch, a 1958 very cherry red, ( almost couldn't tell it was laminate) stock, the laminate is supposed to be stronger and makes sense as it is plywood, birch, laminated grain 90degrees to each layer! I like the birch stock, especially those deep red color copies!

As others have said Laminate is stronger and more stable. While I normally prefer the look of hardwood stocks, the SKS hardwood I've seen is ugly.

I've seen a few nice hardwood stocks that looked really nice. Although most get marked up from being jossled around in the crates during storage and transport.

I like laminate better because I think it looks nicer and it has a slimmer stock making the trigger hand fit better for me.

^^ This is my experience as well. Ive had 3 SKS and first and last were laminate. My second was hardwood. it felt heavier and too big for my trigger hand. the laminate feels just right. I also found my hardwood fit the receiver a bit loose and would slide a little. I assumed it was a one-off problem but looks like im not the only one to experience it.

Yes, some are loose but it happens with laminate also, you can fit slivers of wood in to tighten it up, my 54 laminate ( my shooter) was loose and I tightened it up, shoots better, I am going to try and bed it some time too! I believe the wood shrinks a bit over the years or the may get shot enough to loosen them too! Easy fix!
