Laminated SKS stock or Hardwood with a lot of grain/figure?

Think that black you see is actually pine tar not shellac. Shellac will come off using basically anything. It still looks good if your finish over the pine tar but stain wont take to the wood. 20 coats of BLO and shellac will do.

I know they put it on baseball bats to improve the hold on them, wasn't sure if they did the same on rifles... that was the first thing I thought of when I saw it. Doubt that sh!t will ever come off. Like what you did with yours.

I always though the mottled figure was in the grain of the Baltic birch wood itself. That it was due to the stress the tree goes through during the severe wind and cold of the Russian winters. It makes it really dense like a typical GTA Liberal voter
I can't see Russians first putting pine tar on a stock then a shellac over it. It wouldn't serve a purpose. If they wanted extra grip on the finish the Russians would add ground vodka bottle glass to the shellac.
