Lapping a MilSurp Crown

I don't have any empirical data unfortunately.

I've been doing essentially the same thing for quite a few yrs. It really isn't a re-crowning job, but it works great for smoothing out gouges and cuts that you often see in the muzzle of a MILSURP barrel. These will detract from accuracy by causing the bullet to break from the muzzle in an uneven way. Unlike what is shown in the pics, I do not angle the brass screw around the muzzle. I just put it straight against the muzzle and run the drill at a low speed. The round headed screw will basically self-align and center itself in the muzzle as you run the drill.

Crowns don't get lapped. What he's doing is re-crowning. Only needed if the crown is damaged.
Smoothing out gouges and cuts is re-crowning.

Well I'm going to give it a try. I have a m10 Ross that was cut down to 27" and could really really use this. Thanks for the info.

Glad that this might help. It would be great if you could let us know if it works for you.

This won't ruin a rifle's value; if everyone wants to see a clean bore, then why would they want to see a grungy muzzle? This process doesn't change the crown dimensions like a recrown does and few people are likely to notice or be upset if the muzzle looks clean.
