I have just purchased a Leupold Competition Series 45X45 scope to mount on my Anschutz 54 benchrest rifle. This scope has a 30 mm diameter tube and I have 30 mm rings on the way. I want to lap the rings before installing the scope and was wondering if fine valve grinding compound is suitable for this job? I do have a piece of 30 mm pin stock use as well for the lapping tool. TIA.

Lapping is done after the rings are installed on the bases and are not meant to be moved again. Lapping can be done with the compound you mention. Steel rings can be lapped. Lap enough that the high spots are removed and that the majority of the ring will bear against the scope.
