Lapua announced new rimfire ammo

Interesting. Their website lists the muzzle velocity for this new Long Range and Super Long Range as 1106 fps. That is the same muzzle velocity as their Polar Biathlon, and the SK Biathlon Sport. The cartridge images on the website are computer renditions, (so not necessarily "real"), but it does show a different bullet shape for the LR/SLR compared to their Polar Biathlon bullet.

I am guessing that the lube will be different than the Biathlon, and possibly different primer and powder chemistry, but we will see. I look forward to testing it one day.

Thanks for the news, Longstud. CGN readers will appreciate the information.

SK has Long Range Match, a 1106 fps variety, and so it seems these new ammo varieties were inevitable. Shooters prefering a slightly faster ammo with better performance over SK Long Range will welcome these additions to the Lapua line up.

It may be expected that these varieties are produced on the same production run but graded differently, visually indistinguishable except for the packaging. They may have the same bullets that are used on X-Act, Midas +, and Center X. Shooters will know when lot numbers are seen.

Lapua's description of Long Range and Super Long Range. It's not clear if these rounds can in fact have the claimed "imprroved wind performance". These rounds have the same BC as SK rifle ammo.

The Lapua ballistics chart

Like you always say, it will all be dependant on the lot numbers as far as the accuracy goes. Probably just vanilla with a new wrapper but who knows? I think the limits have been reached and its just wishful thinking on my part that some new revelation will happen. Wonder what ever happend too the Cutting edge DOMINATION to the rimfire world, Ohh HAha

With a BC of 0.172 it must be a boat tail but that I doubt.
The Sierra Infinity program assigns BC's to various rimfire bullets.
They list the Eley Match flat nose at 0.14 and the Lapua Biathlon and Midas at 0.11.

Will have to wait and see but going from 100 metres to 200 metres, Eley I have been shooting requires 20-21 MOA.
Lapua CenterX required 25-26 MOA. We won't know untill it hits the market.

Maybe this will be a very good thing for those who want to run SK LRM... ammo is a falling grade and I have always found Lapua to have less 'fun' in the box so there is no reason to not expect this faster Lapua to be more consistent.

So far, all my rifles have preferred the 'slower' types so this will not change the ammo I look for... but it could help you.

some guys working on the sorting line fell asleep, missed a batch, which would be labeled as 'long range'
some dudes having more coffee working night shift kept awake all night and did job diligently, got the batch done nicely, which would be labeled as "super long range"

it's tomato and tomato.

I'm assuming this new ammo would or at least should have a more consistent velocity, by whatever additional controls Lapua feels would create that result. I don't think bullet shape makes much difference in sub sonic, but they probably made some sort of effort there as well.

It will be interesting to try, but so far 22LR is a buy it and try it adventure with no guarantee regardless of cost or popularity.

I probably have 40 different brands of 22 LR ammo in the cabinet that accumulated from past testing efforts. They just pile up once I've committed to the most recent favorite of the day.

Most recently I tested 3 grades of SK at 300 yards and found no difference between them that would affect my scores.

But hey.. fingers crossed... I'll try these as well if I can find them, but I'll be careful not to buy very many until they prove themselves.

What is also vital for my shooting my Anschutz 64 is that the case measurements (tolerances) be closely within spec, otherwise the brass will not eject properly. This has come up when for instance I wanted to shoot off some bulk stuff after a long layoff and my skills needed reawakening or maybe just wanted to warm up the barrel without it costing too much. I'm persuaded this is one of the rifle's virtues, it having been made with very tight tolerances, but if I read around the internet I see a lot of complaints about the issue where 64s are concerned. Whatever, the higher end stuff extracts just fine and shoots superbly and I'll stick with mein Anschutz.
