Has anyone had problem seating Federal large rifle primers in Lapua brass. When I measure the pocket. The primers are 0.001 deeper than the pocket. And this was after reaming the primer pocket

All large primers I use with Lapua brass seat very well. .001" below surface is perfect, you don't want them sticking out.
What priming tool are you using? that's probably your issue.
Should not be reaming any primer pockets unless they were crimped.

There was a time when the OPs issue was something we often had to watch for. I haven't noticed it to be a problem for the past thirty years.

It wasn't the primer pockets in the brass cases we had to worry about but the primers.

I think I've still got a couple of boxes of Rotweill primers with this issue.

The anvil inserts have skirts which are too long and wouldn't allow the primers to be seated with "normal" pressure in any brand of case.

The petals on those anvils, as well as the cups themselves is very soft, with a bit of extra pressure on your part, they should be able to be seated flush or a thou below the face.

SND is right, don't ream the pockets deeper unless you have the proper tool and a way to control depth accurately. A few thou likely wouldn't be a problem, but if the primer isn't "seated" on the bottom, you could get misfires, if the firing pin has to "push" the primer, reducing impact energy.

OP, it's been a long time since I ran into this issue but I do remember overcoming the problem by using more pressure on the press arm to force the primers to conform to the cases they were being used in.

It's not impossible to set off a primer this way, but I've seen some very "deformed" primers in those pockets and they all went bang consistently.

I've also seen/had semi auto rifles fire out of battery because of suspected high primer issues.

Usually a high seated primer isn't much to worry about, unless your firearm has an incredibly tight headspace. Usually, the bolt face will push the primer deeper when the bolt is camming into battery.

You don't mention how much those primers are sticking out.

If it's only a couple of thousandths, the chances of an out of battery detonation are near zero.

I load Fed 210 and Lapua 6.5 CM. Not too much trouble but some primers will have the odd mark on them from my RCBS hand primer. I would say it’s a bit tougher than priming the Hornadys.
