I picked up a box of Lapua 6.5 Creedmore, small primer pocket and small flash hole. Was a decent price and I knew what I was getting.

What is the best way to decap these? I have a couple Lee decappers and a RCBS one. They obviously don't fit.

Take the Lee decapping rod and spin it in a drill with some sand paper? Punch?

I don't really want to buy new dies for a small batch of brass.

When I was using Hornady dies, I used a Dremel to turn down the decapping pin and it worked great. Have since switched to Whidden dies and they came with smaller decapping pins.

So are Whidden and Redding the only brands known to come with small enough decapping pins?

I was going to hand-decap and clean before even getting to the sizing die, so I could run that with its pin removed but would still need to find a hand-decapper with a small enough pin.

I've only ever broken one normal pin, but I could see wanting some supply of thin pins handy.

Hands up, anyone who just takes a drill bit to their Lapua brass and makes the hole normal-sized?!

What I did was I picked up a Lee universal decapper die and turned the pin down using a drill and a file.
It was only about $20 and a few minutes. Now that is dedicated for my Lapua brass decapping.
I also have a Lyman universal decapping die for all my other larger flash hole brass.

RCBS manufactures rods that accept the .062" diameter headless pins also.

aka 220 Russian,22BR,6mmBR,6.5Grendel are a few that come w/ the smaller diameter pins.

The smaller flash hole reduces the stretching of the primer pocket.
Decapping pins are cheaper than replacement brass.

Looks like the Lee decapper from the 6.5 CM full-length resizing die is about 3 3/8 long while Frankford Arsenal's from the hand decapper is 4" long. Both have .200" shanks. But the one Lee has in a neck-sizing die is a weird beastie with a flared top.

Would rather find a source of a compatible smaller rod (and spares!) rather than either going cheapo and turning down the pin end of the Frankford or buying a whole Redding die that allegedly comes with a smaller pin.

Get a Mighty Armoury universal decaping die. It comes with both sizes of pins and outclasses just about any other universal decapper on the market.

There is no need to use the word allegedly.
The redding comes with the proper diameter pin. At least mine did.

I second the mighty armoury decapping die. I bought one, purchased a few extra pins in large and the Lapua size with it. Runs like a dream. A year later I still haven't broken a single pin. Top quality item.
