So I ordered 4 10rd LAR mags for my new keltec su16 and they won't seat on a closed bolt with 10 loaded. I've heard something about shaving down the follower and they work fine. My question: the follower? That's the plastic piece with the bullet shape on it at the top that they sit on right? Does anyone have a picture of this modification by any chance? Reading text is just confusing me.

Don't get me wrong, 9 rounds is cool but 10 is better. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance and yes I know I sound like a noob.

You are correct about the follower.
I've never had to shave the follower so I can't be much help there, but go slowly. If you remove too much material the magazine will hold 11 rounds, and the magazine will explode.

when you shave a follower, you need to remove overall length. this is done from the bottom (the part of the follower that hits the base of the mag when it bottoms out).

I had to shave some followers in S&W M&P 9mm mags, and i did it by disassembling the mags, removing the followers from the springs, and sliding the legs of the followers on 100 grit sandpaper with the part of the follower that touches the bottom round in the mag at the top.

I think in LAR mags there are legs front and back that stick down in the mag fore and aft of the spring.

the two legs that stick down are what you shorten, not the part that touches the bullets.

If you go too far and create an 11 round mag, that's illegal, even if you never load to 11.

as a wild guess, you probably need to take off very little, certainly less than the diameter of a round. test by loading, and when an 11th round goes about 1/2 way in, stop.

Thanks for the clarification. Glad u posted before I started to shave the wrong side. Ya I will be definitely going a very little at a time. I don't expect much is needed as many say some of theirs work and some don't. Prolly like 1/16 of an inch or so.

Take the plastic follower out and trim a we bit off with a dremel.Just don't do it to much or your mags will hold 11 and you'll be in violation. I also had to sand down my rough feed lips because they where digging into the soft brass.I also dremeled a small groove where the bullets where dragging on the front of the mag so the round wouldn't drag so much as it was being fed.I have no idea how to post pictures here....

I sanded with 80 grit on the bottom of the followers to take off material. Smoothed with 220 and then rebuilt. Total of just over 1/16 of an inch. Tested and re sanded. I'll here and there ad they all clip in proper now. Tested and none hold 11. Will see about feeding this weekend when I shoot them.

If someone had a magazine that held more then 5 or 10 can they block or pin it themselves or does it have to come from factory already done?

You can do it yourself, so long as it is a "Permanent" alteration that requires a "tool" to remove/alter. The rivet guns sold at Home Depot, for example, are very easy to use, and generally do the job well enough for government work. My preference is for an internal method though, so you don't have a rivet getting caught on the magwell.

Not that you should ever have a prohibited device such as an evilbadscary megaultrasuper high capacity magazine like that. If you do encounter such magazine, hold it at bay with a holy symbol until it can be pinned to the legal limit.

Assuming you have the OEM mag that came with your rifle and that it can be loaded and inserted on a closed bolt....
...Take the OEM apart, and 1 mag at a time. Compare the angles, and various measurements and file the LAR to match OEM.

Well they all worked fine on the weekend. Shot close to 280rds between the 4 magazines and no problems. I actually had two FTF with the stock mags but none with the LAR mags.

I had to shave mine down quite a bit. They work fine now, just need a good firm press to seat properly. Also I'm not surprised you had issues with the included Kel Tec mags, its well known that they are junk. I tossed mine under the bench when I got my rifle and invested in some PMAGs, no issues to report at all with them.
