LAR mag Feeding??

Hello all, need a little help.

I did a search, and did not find the info I was looking for.

I was wondering, are you guys getting your 10 round LAR mags (in 223/5.56), to feed all 10 rounds reliably??

I have several, and while I have not tested all of them, the ones I use on a regular basis, seem to feed 9 without issue, put 10 in and I have issue with the first round striping properly.

Is there some tuning or tips anyone could share??

I really hesitate to mess arround with mags as they are new, and I do not have very much experience here. These are the latest Lar mags with the Tacti-puls, and as far as I know have good springs and are new.

Im acutally to the point where I am ready to turff them all and go to Pmags.

Hey AB, I had the same problem with the couple that I had (and of course, we have the same issue with CF 30 rounders....). Don't mess with the guts or they'll start having other problems. In my experience, I polished the inside of the mag lips (very lightly, fine steel wool). Next, leave the mags fully loaded over a course of several weeks to a month or so. The springs will start to loose some of their compression, but should be just enough to allow the first rd to be stripped, and the last rd to top out & be picked-up by the bolt/carrier.

If I assumed this is done by hand, and the idea is to just "break or remove the sharp edge" just inside edge of the feed lips, would this be correct??

Yes, by hand. But all you are trying to do is polish the finish on the inside of the mag lips (where the round is dragged) and smooth any possible nicks on the sharp edge of the lips. You still want them to remain sharp........just smoother.
I actually think that leaving the mag loaded to compress the springs might be the better of the two exercises, but doing both things got my mags working better. I suggest trying it one only, and see if it helps.
 
Me too. I never bother stuffing the full 10 in, because the first won't feed otherwise. I do find that dropping the bolt catch on the first round is usually better than racking the charging handle.

To be honnest I am very glad to hear these reports, as I thought I was the only one having issues.

Um, well......just be careful when messing with increasing/reducing internal dimensions, either through adjusting the follower, spring or even the floorplate. (Trust me, I've messed around with CF mags for years trying to fix all kinds of issues.......)

With all mags filled to capacity, if you focus too much in trying to get it to feed the first round properly, you may end-up creating a reverse situation in that the last rounds may not be stripped due to incomplete or improper follower seating. There is, of course, a very delicate balance in partial vs full compression of the spring, and the absolute distance between follower and mag lips.

The rule is simple; If the mag feeds fine (first to last) with less rounds charged, then the issue is simply spring compression. Changing anything else is only asking for problems. I have simply kept a guilty mag filled to capacity locked in my ammo box for a period of time; for my mags......it always seemed to do the trick, even if it wasn't a quick solution.

I took a picture a while back with the springs comparing the old short springs to the new long springs that came int he newer magazines. What is the length of your springs?

I can't seem to find the picture on my computer anymore. It was on Questar old website but its gone now with the new one.

I had the same issue till I got new springs.

I will give it a try...........but I have a feeling that it is not a spring issue. I will do some tests and report back.
