Hi all,

I just bought a new Winchester shotgun and planned on doing some duck hunting this fall so I came across a good deal on some steel Winchester shells on Cabelas. I made the order because I was aware of the "FREE SHIPPING" now however they are going to charge me more because "FREE SHIPPING" is only available for items under 10 pounds. Anyways my ammo order is around 80 pounds when I called to ask. I am curious how much they will probably charge me to ship to NS from Manitoba where there main warehouse is. Anyone else run into this issue? Any estimates on costs? Ive got like 600 rounds on order so it'd bother me quite badly if I had to cancel the whole thing due to high shipping costs. All in all not impressed but I should have read the fine print to realize things actually aren't free in this world.

First - take a deep breath ...... relax .... good now? Cabela's will ship your order to the closest store to you. It's called in store pick up and works great for not having to pay Hazmat fees on a to your door order. Don't know where your closest store is but this is a good option to use.

I agree if they are being wierd about the order either Cancel the order as many other dealers including sight sponsors here will likely beat through price cabelas has
Or break up the orders and make cabelas pay the bill for their "Policies"

So............?...........free shipping is to your door or to their closest to you door?
Never could figure this chit owtt.
Give up.

That was what I was thinking break it down to smaller chunks or if its too much ill just have to scrap it and buy local. If there was a store close by I would have done in store pickup but with a 8 hour round trip to the nearest store I figured id hold off as thats $100 worth of gas as it is.

why frett over this.
Go to your local dealer and see what they can offer up.
600 rounds @ eighty pounds and you have an idea what the cost is.
Do some leg work and see what the comparison is cause hunting season is around the corner and good deals will not last long.

and why wouldn't you just pick up the phone and talk to Cabela's order line directly about what is possible?
Discussion here is just speculation.

Ive called them they are working on my shipping quotes I made my order on Wednesday they said they'd have a quote for me next week sometime thats why I asked if anyone had experience with typical quotes because I figured it was by the pound.

I ordered a few items and added powder to it as well. Shipping was stated to be free on orders $99 +. Bill was $125 including $40ish powder. Ordered it up and I got a call a few days later saying that there was a cost to ship the powder and it was going to be $45. I told them to ship it to the closest Cabelas so I could save on the shipping. (Nearest is an hour and a half away and they had none in stock) They said that was not possible as they cannot ship the powder to another store, so I cancelled the whole order. They were a little taken back and surprised, but I was refunded.

Even with a commercial account, shipping ammunition is expensive.

There is basically two ways to ship. If they use a courier you get double gouged because 1) they ship by weight and 2) they will charge "dangerous goods" fees (hazmat is actually a US term). The next problem with using a courier is that they will only allow four separate pieces (or 50 pounds at many courier) per waybill. So if you order 8 cases, that is "two separate orders" with all the front end loading fees on each plus the DG fees added to both (as if it was two separate orders).

That's why it's almost always "not feesable" to ship something like cases of shotgun shells.

The second way to ship is by LTL (less than a truck load) carrier. They charge you a rate for a "skid spot" plus mileage. To get a pallet load of shotgun shells (40 cases) it would cost anywhere between 125 to 150 bucks within Ontario (that's all I can speak to). Whether that skid has 40 cases or 10 cases the cost is the same, but that is still cheaper than sending them Purolator, Canpar or DHL because that 10 cases would have to go as "three separate shipments".

So I don't order 5 or 10 cases at a time ($12.50 to $30 a case for shipping is insane) - when I order 40 that drops the (surcharge) to under $4/case or 40 cents a box. Even for businesses they don't make it easy to get shells and it will cost you unless you really buy "volume".

Hey, Hornady ships free if you order 8K worth at a time :)

larger orders should be somewhat cheaper on Ammunition too. ie 1 pack costs $15/20 then a case of 500 should run about $14ish per pack saving you a couple bucks and them a larger sale. Whats the incentive in charging people who make larger orders proportionately more? Meh buy local or online from a cheaper source Ammunition is like mortgages its the same thing everywhere it just depends on price.

Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it. I guess this is the only time I've really bought a lot of ammo online 5 boxes of rifle ammo last winter was quite cheap and still fell into the free shipping category. I will check out local dealers and see what they will do my closest is an hour away but they have given me good service in past just hopefully they can beat the outrageous Canadian tire prices on some stuff. I never thought about the dangerous goods cost I figured the shipper would also cover those. All a learning experience that one stop shopping comes with its challenges.

Not free shipping to your door. I live literally one minute drive from the distribution centre (former distribution centre??) in Winnipeg and if I ordered to home there would be shipping charges, but if I ordered to the store, (about 40 minutes drive) it was free in-store pickup.
I guess there was tons of stuff going to the store anyway, so it all cost the same to them.

Can't figure out why that would happen. I have placed three separate orders for powder on line and had them shipped to my closest store - never paid a cent for shipping or hazmat fees
