Is anybody else frustrated with the lack of specially designed large capacity pistol safes? I currently have a "stack on" safe bolted to my wall (holds 6 pistols) , and another small safe on the floor beneath (holds ammo/primers/gun powder). I want to steer clear of rifle safes as there's normally only 1-2 shelves in them, the rest is open for rifle storage.

I'm going to run out of room in the stack on right away....and it looks like my only alternative is to buy *another* stock-on.

Does anybody know of a large capacity safe that can hold lots of pistols? Between 15-20 would be good.

I would buy this, but I don't think my "job" will move it when I transfer out of here (they range from 545lb - 800lb).

That's a Browning Tactical safe.........retails 2600-3100 USD.

Costco in BC has Honeywell safes for 325 that have 3 shelves.....(you can easily make a 4th).......good for at least a dozen pistols....not sure if they carry the same product as Manitoba.

Almost any safe will work for Pistols since they don't need to be over 3 feet tall.
Of course it helps if you are a bit handy and can make some custom shelves or even better drawers inside the box.

If you're at all handy with some basic tools then just bet the rifle version and make up some plywood shelves that you cover with a thin carpet similar to that found in some of the nicer commercial gun safes. That way you have a nice tall cabinet with maybe 4 or 5 shelves to stack your pistols onto.

Even better would be to make up the shelves with some sort of rack or thin partitions that separate the pistols to avoid safe kisses.

$3k??? ouch!!! at that price, i'd find a buddy with welding skills and get a custom one made using steel or aluminum. but that's a good idea with the wood shelves and carpet, at least as a starting point...

The Honeywell 2743D safe at Costco ($339 in Calgary, fantastic value) only comes with 2 or 3 shelves, but it has built in rails running almost full height that would let you add as many extra shelves as you can fit just by adding clips and cutting more shelf pieces.

A pic of mine:

You can see the rail behind the shortie 870, it runs down to about 14-16" off the bottom. I currently have 4 handguns on the two shelves and could easily fit another 2 if I wanted to, more if I put fingers in to stand the pistols up instead of laying them down. You would have lots of room for 20+ handguns and a decent pile of ammo in the bottom area.

mmmh, i think you'r short on ammo;) , nice safe setup by the way

Buy a rifle safe from Bass Pro ($800 plus change) with one shelf on top. Then buy three rubber pistol racks from Brownells (each rack holds three pistols). You can fit three racks on the top shelf and right away you can put 9 pistols on the top shelf. If you need more, you can always hang them on the inside of the door using simple clothes hooks.

That way I could put 4 long rifles over 53" (you can drill holes at the back of the shelf to put the barrels through, if they are on the back, they won't touch the pistol racks), 15 medium length and short CQB rifles and 13 pistols in one medium size safe. If I need to hang a couple of more pistols on the inside of the door, I still can do it. I am out of space for rifles, though. I guess it's time for Stack On.

Albog, Nice setup....how do you like your railed revolver?

It has the smoothest action and trigger pull of all revolvers, including Python, and is as accurate (if not more) as the Python, although with a shorter barrel. There is a big difference between Smith's production line and Performance Centre firearms.

And, it's an 8-rounder, so I can compete alongside semi-autos, just have to get a hang of changing clips fast.

FN Five Seven

Thanks for the replies, I know exactly what to get now :D.

Hey, USPfan;

I see you've got a FN Five Seven as one of the pistols listed on your signature line. Where do you get ammo for it? Do you reload? I know factory 5.7 x 28 is not available anywhere in Canada.

Nice,
It's on my long list....:)

It's in my signature, but it's there a bit premature :). The transfer is approved and it's on the way to me via mail.

I just ordered 1,000 rds from a user on this site (via EE). Also, European Arms (North Vancouver) is an official Fiocchi Ammo dealer. I gave them a call, and they have over 100,000 rounds confirmed to come in by early 2011...he said it's hard to get due to paperwork/wait times, but he *does* get it in. All I had to do was email him, and he'll give me a heads up when there's a confirmed delivery date. Once It's in I'll clearly buy bulk (3,000 rds or so) to last me for the next dry spell.

It's not ideal, but you *can* get ammo. Which is why I decided to get it :). I have a reloading press and plan on getting the dies, etc for this calibre too...should make it easier. Any other questions feel free to throw me a pm!
