Large Loop

Hey Shooter, Have cut a number of large lever loops and trigger guard profiles out on a water jet, then cut the existing lever at the appropriate point on the trigger guard, welded them together, refinish and your in business. regards Bully

Shooter177,

It's easier to modify an existing lever. Most commercial ones are modified Marlin levers. You can order a spare from Marlin for cheap enough. Just cut the lower loop, bend, weld in a piece to fill and finish.

Don't bother trying to mill out the internal end of a replacement lever unless you have access to a very good profiler. That part of the lever interfaces very intimately with the action.

You can get a reasonably priced pistol grip large loop lever from Dave's Custom Guns.

Most examples of DIY large loop levers involve cutting, bending, and rewelding. I also think think there may be some splicing of new metal. I've seen some very good examples, but also an equal number of bad examples (i.e., the curve has a bit of reflex or just doesn't match the curve of the pistol grip).

I think your best bet is to track down a DRC or WWG factory-made big loop lever. You may also want to contact Wanstalls as they were bringing in some Rossi big loop levers as discussed in this thread:

To show that it is possible to make one from scratch using CNC CAD/CAM, I've included a quote from this post on MarlinOwners:

http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/index.php/topic,38429.0.html

My best friend also bought a .44 Magnum 1894. His dad had a Winchester John Wayne commemorative with the big loop lever. My friend Karl called me and asked if Marlin made a big loop lever (this was before Wild West Guns even existed). When I told him that they didn't, he decided right then to make one. It helped that his family business had a machine shop with a CAD/CAM and that he was an engineer.

Karl blueprinted his Marlin lever and his dad's Winchester's big loop lever. He overlayed the blueprints and created a work sheet for the internal functioning of a Marlin lever with the Winchester's big John Wayne loop. Then he turned it over to his CAD/CAM genius and put the proper steel into the machine.

Out came four Marlin big loop levers. Before he had them blued, he had his initials, my initials, and my dad's initials stamped on the bottom (he left the fourth lever blank). They all worked perfectly the minute we installed them in our rifles.

Here's a picture of the result:
