I did something that I know I should never do. I was was reloading really late one night and was priming some 45-70 brass, I was 16 short so I just grabbed the next box of primers took out 16 primers and finshed priming the last of the brass. I then finshed loading this brass with 405gr bullets and 27gr of 5744 powder. The next day I was looking at my primers and noticed that I used large pistol primers instead of large rifle. IS THIS SAFE TO USE???

I reload handgun only, but this might help. I reload .45 acp almost exclusively, and found some once fired cci 45 brass which had small pistol primers. I reloaded that brass with a magnum small pistol primer using the same formula i used for similar brass with large pistol primers and found no difference. Now i never chrono'd the brass but it fires 100 percent reliable and is just as accurate. hope this helps

No harm in using large pistol primers in 45-70, in anything except extremely heavy loads.
It's all about pressure. Rifle primers are designed to handle more pressure than pistol primes.
However, a 44 magnum, designed to operate on 40,000 pressure, is designed to use pistol primers.
Factory loaded 45-70 will be less than 20,000 pressure.
If you are loading medium, to high pressure loads in your 45-70, you will be in the order of 20,000 to possibly 30,000.
I used pistol primers in the 45-70 by preference, because they seemed to give better accuracy.

X2 ^^ I have used them (LPP) in 45-70 as well.

Really? Now I will have to try this. What kind of powders and projectiles do you do this for. I am extremely interested!

Unique for the lightest of loads.
4198 for medium, accuracy loads.
4895 for medium to heavy loads.
Ditto 4320.
Whatever.

i loaded 30 30 for years with win pistol primers. lever guns generaly don't have the stricking forse of a bolt gun and run at lower pressures. i wouldn't worry.
